Pocillipora picture
Here is a picture of my Pocillipora sp. I got this in trade as a small thumb size frag from a fellow reefer back in Jan. It's about the size of a large grapefruit now.
Regards, Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Sweet Pocillopora. Can't quite grasp the color,is it purplish or more to the pink hue Plus, what camera do you use?I have some Pocillopora that I've got from SueT earlier this year and it too showed an very fast growth.I would say from the size of the thumb as well and now it's about a size of an apple(what's with all this fruit?) Your pics are allways wonderfull and I'm trying hard to figure out my cp885(no luck so far).

Gene Ha ha!
Me and you both! Have you seen the picture in Borneman's book of the bright purple P.eydouxi? That's the one I want! My camera is a Sony Mavica MCV-FD85. It's great for outdoor scenery pictures, indoor with flash, and the macro mode. But for some reason it won't take good pictures of the overall tank. I really want a Nikon Coolpix 995 (my wife says get a job bum). My Pocillipora is quite purple. I also have one like yours and a pinkish P. damicornis. Regards, Kevin

Kevin,
That's the picture that made me go nuts looking for it Well, maybe one day one of us gets lucky and then we can exchange .You have my promise that if I get a hold of a piece first,I'll let you know. You never know, stranger things been known to happen to me I think the Coolpix 995 got replaced by a 4500.That's the one I ordered but it never came,so I've cancelled and got the 885.I'm totaly useless when it comes to photography .PS. Forgot to ask when you'll take some cuts of that purplish Pocillopora? And,I've gotten this two small colonies that I have no clue at what it might be,any thoughts?

Very difficult (OK impossible) but I will offer a species A. lutkeni. Irregular corallites with (what appears) to be very rounded edges. I will venture to say the growth form will change to longer, thinner branches in captivity unless exposed to very high alternating current. All just speculation on my part of course

Thanks Kevin
I guess I have to work on upgrading waterflow in this tank.I have a mag12 for return in this tank(75g) and 3 maxijets 1200 on a wavestrip.I could concieavably upgrade to mag18 but I'm not sure this will change anything.BTW,you harboring a guess on id from the pic is very much appreciated Kevin.I still don't have Veron's books(on order) and for me to even think of guessing is silly.Unless it's an abvious ![]()

Don't have a clue the exact species of that piece, but looks nice. And so does that pocillapora Kevin. My pocillipora that is similar to you is huge. I traded in a softball sized piece to a local store and the one I have left is nearing that size ... grows like a weed in my tank

Chuck,
It's the frag I got from Paul back in Jan. It was very dark, almost a blackish brown at first. Regards, Kevin Gene, It's a good excuse to dig through Veron's books ![]() Kevin

I have a nice colony of pocillopora eydouxi that I came across at my LFS. I've had it about 6 months and Thank Heavens no one knew what it was til I walked in there. The color is a pastel pink with contrasting green polyps. Very nice and healthy. It isn't the color of the one in Eric's book but it is the only one I have ever seen in person. The color is kind of hard to describe, but this is close.

Gene, Hi and Thanks for asking. With finally a diagnosis I don't know if better will ever be in my vocabulary again, but I am trying to hang in. You know that if I can ever figure out how to frag this eydouxi, the first frag will go to you.
I would consider trying to frag this coral a close second to trying to frag a solitaryensis. These branches are more like lobes or something.I forgot one small part and that is the tips or tops of these lobes are a brighter pink with the rest being the pastel pink and green polyps. Still pretty cool color going on. Talk to you later. Best wishes for a Happy Holiday to all. my 180 ecosystem sps/clam tank: http://berlinmethod.com/suet/ my 120 ecosystem sps tank: http://suetruett.homestead.com/home.html |

Hi Sue,
I know what you mean and I'm just happy that you visit the board again and talking to us I'll wait as long as needed, whenever you figure out how to frag it and it's mature enough to cut Kevin,so will you ever frag this purple thing? ![]()

Excellent pic exeryone. Here's a pic of my eydouxi http://www.photo.net/photodb/image-d...164205&size=md
I know Kevin and Sue have seen this pic on another reef board. The same problem I have with fraging this coral is how... I have stainless steel dremel tool cutoff wheels but I still haven't got the heart to cut into it. I really need to frag it and fill the waiting list orders because it getting too big for it's location. Glad to see you got one Sue. I changed my bulbs to Radiums from Iwasakis and the color is a little more purple than pink like it used to be. It now also has really green polyps under actinics where before that wasn't noticeable. Great looking Pocillopora George!I like to ask you a question if you don't mind. What is that thing you have living in the coral,is it comensal?the reason I ask is becouse I have something similar living in a acro colony and I just would like to know what it is
Seems like it's consuming some of the mucus of the coral in my colony, the thing that puzzling me is that it's a burrowing type.Does not seem to bother my coral though.

Thanks!
That worm type thing is a vermetid snail. It doesn't seem to bother anything but I don't want to kill it and have a hole in the coral for something else to get in there. I don't think it burrows in the coral but rather the snail grows a tube and the coral grows over the tube. I also have a large pocillopra crab living in the piece. George |
