Black Pearl Oyster

LOL, Just got a fax

Quote:

Black Peal Oyster, with a black pearl growing inside. These Oysters come from our own partnership with a pearl farm in the Cook Islands.
Was implanted with a 5mm-6mm nucleasabout 6 months ago. In about 18 months the pearl inside will grow to about 9mm as the nacre encapsulates the nuclei and the pearl will be ready for harvest. "

Any comments?

Barry

I think that would be very cool if you could keep it alive. But I don't think I would want to cut it open after 18 months to retrieve the pearl. My wife on the other hand .......(I can easily picture her a with knife in hand waiting by the tank)

Kevin,

I am with you, I couldn't raise it for 18 months then cut it up to get a pearl.

Just thought it was funny getting this fax from one of my supplier.

I think it's perfect. That's the only bivalve I can think of that gives you a reward when it dies... It's like a consolation prize.

I think these clams are filter feeder and will not do well in our tank.

I confess... I really like oysers. And black "South China Sea" pearls are the coolest...

It is kinda weird that a clam/oyster supplier would send stuff about cultured pearls... although a 9mm pearl is a NICE pearl...

but it's only one

Barry, you can always set up your own pearl farm on the side!

I hate to say it, but I did get some interesting ashtrays months agao when I had a bit of an accident. I accidentally turned on a pump that pumped raw, curing fresh liverock kinda water out of a rubbermaid and back into the clams.

They didn't seem to like that too much. Fortunately, I didn't have but a few.

Interesting Cigar ashtrays, though.

A tank crash would be much less painful if you got a string of black pearls out of the deal.....

We hear you, almostdiva....it's just that no one here can afford black pearls, because they've spent all their money on bristleworms and sea slugs.

Reinhold,

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!

THAT is too true! And thos d(*&$n slugs are EXPENSIVE.

We can always longingly think of them though:
"if I tear down the tank, sell all the bits on eBay or blah, blah, how much other JUNK can I buy with the money?"

I can't buy pearls either, I want just the mollusks at the moment <sigh> I suppose I could shop for a rich, old husband, ala Anna Nicole Smith.. "Please honey, it's only 500 gallons" !!????

Who'd have thunk such an inocuous (sp?) question from Barry would start such a flurry from all of us!

almostdiva--if you do find the old rich guy, you might want to refrain from mentioning your mollusk desires until you're pretty far along in the relationship! He won't necessarily understand it, but hopefully by then, he won't ask questions either.

TEE-HEE!!

You guys are FUNNY!!!

Reinhold, you're right about the waiting part.

Palmetto -- An EXCELLENT point. But she's rich.... If I could spend on my tanks what she spends on dunkin' munchkins, I'd be a happy well-stocked woman!

Diva's right... black pearls rock. And yeah, I could see that as a consolation prize - but I couldn't cut one open just for a pearl.

How big, theoretically, could the pearl get? Assuming, of course, that it could just keep growing? It could be the talk of the bowling world!

Filter feeders, eh? Hm... the 'fuge lights are offset...maybe just kill the return pump and dose it with DTs every night?

Yeah, I can see you ladies - "Hmmmmm.... he really is not looking too good today, is he?? Perhaps ....."

or just scraping the glass one day and the razor just slips....

not a good place for a black pearl oyster to be, if you ask me!
