id ?
I hope someone can help with id on this coral I got from my lfs today. It seemed that out of four they had this was the only piece not bleached or partially bleached. My thinking was Pavona but I'm not sure after I looked in Erics book
TIA.

I've been trying to post a question on Eric B's forum, but attaching a pic there has been a PITA lately,so I gave up I was thinking Pavona but after looking in the books it's now looks like maybe Merulina or I could be wrong alltogether here's one more pic a bit closer

Thanks Chuck
I liked it when I first saw it at the lfs but when I ask them what it was I got no answer.Like I said before, out of the four pieces they had, this was the only one looking good.So I figured I'd take it before it's to far gone as well.I just really like to get some idea of what it is so I can provide proper care(lights, current, etc.)It was under 400w MH in a 40g breeder at the store and I believe this is the reason other pieaces were bleached, although I could be wrong. If it's a Pavona, intence light should be no problem ,but so far I have no idea![]()

I will guess it's Merulina ampilata.

Thank you Kevin
I'm guessing the hasbendry would be same for all of the species of Merulina or there is a difference?Erics book has some info on this coral but if you have some more to add I'd be very greatfull.

They will tolerate lower light levels. Be careful about giving it too much light to quickly. It does well in low to moderate flow. Make sure that detritus doesn't settle on it.
HTH, Kevin

Thanks for the tips Kevin.I try to gently blow with the turkey baster every other day as my clownfish likes to make a snowstorms, plus my coris aygula usualy gets mouthfull of sand and then just dumps it on my clams and corals, this fish is a real PITA.
Regarding light,it went from 400w this morning to 250w in my tank, plus I have it in a lower part of the tank.Hopefuly this will be ok for this coral. Thanks again Kevin.

My died when I had the kalk accident while back.
But I found that the flow is important for the future shaping of this coral, my was growing downward because of the flow coming from the top. HTH!

Gene, that is definitely merulina amplicata or scabricula. Also known as lettuce coral. Eric's first book has a better id and page on it. I have a piece of it and have had it for about 2.5 years now. It is a kind of slow grower, but under actinics it will glow like crazy. HTH..

Hi Rocky,
Yours is a very nice piece as well. How long do you have it and what lights it's under? From what I understand(from Eric's book) it's not an easy coral to keep. I like it alot though and prepared to do what's needed. So far it's been doing OK and is settling in(after my stupid clownfish left it alone). What is it with this clowns, every time I put something new in the tank,I got to ask them first ![]()

I have to disagree with you on it's been Hydnophora.I can see polyps extended on your coral but you'll see no polyps to speak off on Merulina, just ridges and valeys
I like it more and more every day.I like to thank you for your interest and a pic ![]()
