Some people soak their food in garlic to help ward off ich.

Selcon, Zoe, every day. Garlic or Garlic Extreme before adding new fish and other times of stress. I've had very good success doing a cycle of No-ich (Kick-ich) when adding new fish. Sometimes they still get an outbreak of ich, but it's usually mild and short-lived.
I'm very big on adding food supplements, for my cats, my fish and myself. Since we can't duplicate the nutritional environment of the ocean, the addition of Omega-3 lipids and vit C is a good and safe way to help the fish maintain healthy immune systems.

i agree on the huffa/vitamin supplements...
i view garlic like any other "snake oil" type product that no one can substantiate-like some product on a late night infomercial![]()
try not using the garlic-youll find that ich goes away on its own ...jmo
the best prventative is maintaining healthy living conditions-that includes water quality and overall lack of "stressors"(compatible tankmates with enough room/hiding places food)in general.
some would also say quarantining is the best preventative-just make sure you have a tank that is big enough -and mature enough- for the species in question.
I use frozen mysis shrimp and frozen brine shrimp. How long would you soak the food for?
Garlic extract is far from a "snake oil", and unlike most of those "magic" solutions, this one is actually CHEAP!Originally posted by organicreefer

The effects of Garlic extract are known as having positive medicinal effects towards heart disease, atherosclerosis, sickle cell anemia & cancer to name a few.
Like any other vitamin, it's great for you and I can google many articles to back that up. Take a visit to your local supermarket and buy a few garlic bulbs and squish them up to extract the juices. It's that cheap.

like i said -snake oil..and i can "google up" an article supporting just about anything-and anyway were talking fish here.......
hey -at least youre fish wont have to worry about vampires![]()
I put garlic in the catagory of "can't hurt, might help". I'm sure it doesn't work for every fish in every situation, and there's probably a lot of thinking it helped when the outcome would have been the same without the garlic. But then, maybe not. What it does do is makes me feel like I'm doing everything possible, so it's really a tonic for my own benefit.
tech1, to answer your question, here's what I do. I also use frozen mysis and brine shrimp in addition to frozen cubes and my own frozen recipe. When I mix the thawed food up in a little cup I add a pinch of dry flakes or pellets to help soak up the vitamins better. Otherwise give it about 5 minutes. To be sure the food gets soaked real good, mix it and put in the vitamins in the evening and refridgerate it over night.
