Need Help With Nuesance Anenomy!!!!

Sorry I dont have a picture, but I will explain as best as possible. They are a light tan/off white colore with their size ranging from less than a dime to over the size of a quarter. Their tentacles are rather short with a bubble tip. They grow on the sides of my brain and meat corals, stinging them so the corals retract. In addition, they have terminated my star polyops by simply overbearing them, smothering and stinging them to death. Their are two ways I get rid of them: by poking the ones near the meat and brain coral to death with a sowing needle, and giving my live rock (colonies poplulate the lr) a fresh water dip for twelve hours and then scrape the dead anenomes off with a tooth brush. However I can not do this with my large pieces of lr and using a needl is tedious plus killng all these anenomes in the tank would pollute it. I heard a peppermint shrimp might work but I have a cleaner shrimp. Oh yeah my tank is 50g. Please all suggestions welcome!

Do a search on Aiptasia anemone and you will find several solutions for them.

Kevin

I've heard a well placed explosive charge has done wonders for some people... of course this technique is not foe the faint at heart. Try some Kalk and paste it right over the suckers. If you break them apart the little pieces will grow into new ones. Also a flame thrower will do wonders for your problem, it also helps to get rid of ugly curtains. I heard someone say they once would pull out the rocks and take a acetylene torch to them, it smells up the place though so do it outside.

LMAO. Henry, a flame thrower?

I had a very nasty aiptasia explosion in my 110g and I tried just about everything, exept the flame thrower and nothing seems to work.Just recently I bought a Chelmon rostratus and most of aiptasia is gone.Very quickly this fish became my favorite fish of all. There is a few remaining but I'm not worried as I have a biological control

In the past I'v had great luck with the peppermint shrimp. Make sure its the true peppermint not the camel back. Your tank size I would try 2 or 3. Their should be no problems mixing the cleaner shrimp with the peppermint.

Gene

You got your Chelmon rostratus back in November right? It sound like hes doing ok. I'm think about adding one to my establised 135 reef tank. Not for aiptasia control , fortunitaly I'v have none. I just think its a awesome fish. Do you have any suggestion or comments on this fish. From my research it sounds like they are doing fine, once establised, on mysis shrimp, other meaty foods and what they find on thier own.

Kevin your import knowing you have one to would be appreciated.

Gabe,
My error. I missed the part about the bubble tips. They are a worse pest than Aiptasia. They are likely Majano sp. The only thing I know that eats them are butterflyfish. Specifically the raccoon butterflyfish (Chaetodon lunula) is one that eats them. The problem is these fish are not reef safe or at least risky to add to your reef.

Regards,
Kevin

Dean,
Mine has been a great fish so far. It is very tame and eats from my fingers. It likes mysis shrimp, raw shrimp, and freeze dried plankton.

HTH,
Kevin
PS: 2 corals I would caution with it are meat corals (T. geoffroyi) and Favia sp. (Open Brain).

Dean,
So far my fish had no interest in any corals, just cleaned house on tiny feathers and Aiptasia. As far as other food,I get some fresh clams and break a tiny hole in the shell, Chelmon does the rest.two clams a week and some frozen mysids
I don't want him to forget abot Aiptasias
I found that some bloodwoms may entice mine once in awhile.
Other than that,what Kevin said
PS. In my case the copper band had to deal with yellow tang and a p****d off clarkii clownfish. He came trough with flying colors and made a yeloow tang look quite clumzy and stupid

Gene,
My Purple Tang and RS Sailfin didn't like my Copperband either especially the Purple. But the Copperband is so quick and agile that at feeding time he doesn't even bother to swim away from either of the tangs. Just swims a circle around them and I mean very close maybe 2" away. Very comical to say the least.

Regards,
Kevin

Thanks Gene and Kevin sounds like I'v found my final fish addition to this tank. I to have a Purple tang and he dose rule the tank. This will be biggest concern. Hopefully I can find a Copperband eating and smart enough to deal with a tang like you guys have.
