Dinoflagellates

I think I spelled it right.

We have a bit of an outbreak going on right now and I am battling it currently with some activated carbon and keeping up on my water changes. From everything I read, it sounds like just another type of algae that blooms when phosphates or dissolved organic compounds are present. All of the tests performed come out fine but it could be that the algae is utilizing the nutrients before they measure.

I only illuminated the tank for about 2 hours last night and plan to only run the lights about 4 hours tonight, trying to get it under control. It was only in a few places but 2-3 nights ago, it was spread throughout the tank. Today it seems to be pretty thin and only in a few places again.

Any other tips or thoughts?

I know when I had an out break of this junk I couldn't figure out why. At that time my Calcium Reactor was cranked which was leading to an excess of CO2 in my system, along with a low PH at night even though I have a refugium. So I tried turning down my drip rate and put a air diffuser in my drip cup. No more dinoflachulents . I have heard that the flachulents feed off CO2.

Good luck,
Chris
