400 watt mh coming!
ok I have a 50 which is 48" long and with snad bed 14" deep. I will be getting a 400 watt mh pendent 15k . I will hang it center so I have sps\clams in center and softies towards the outer parts. I was wondering your thoughts on begginner sps. I will not have a calicum reactor in but do use reef advantage calicum. Flow with 1200 maxy jetS. what you think?

Welcome to an obsession that is hard to put down!
Some good SPS to start with Montipora (especially montipora digitata) Pocillaporas (just about any of em) There are others, just try to stay away from the Acroporas for the most part until you have mastered the others. A 400w MH is nice but pay attention to where your corals are coming from....if you pull a nice SPS piece from a fish store under power compacts (or even MH's with less wattage or much higher than yours) then you are gonna have to acclimate these corals which can be VERY tedious....If I where you I would try to buy your SPS from ppl that grow under strong lighting that way there is much less chance of bleaching. |

If they are new I would start with a minimal photo period, like 5 hours. Then over weeks move your exposure longer. Like a half hour a week. I have my MHs on for 10 1/2 hours a day ...

In my opinion, you put SPS in the tank when you are prepared to keep them, not to rush it too fast or you will not have the best success. Don't get light and then automatically decide to immediately have a full capacity SPS system.
You should still acclimate the full tank to the new lighting. If you get hardy SPS, such as Digitata or something similar, then a reduced lighting period should be just fine for them. |

Awesome! That orange Montipora digitata will turn bright orange (and I mean BRIGHT) if you put it about 12" below the water nearly directly under the bulb.
Regards, Kevin PS: I'll post a picture of the parent colony tomorrow when the lights come on. I don't have an updated one right now.

Yes it does. Here is the promised picture of the parent colony. I have made countless frags from it over the years. This colony is towards the bottom of the tank 24" below the lights. I have several other colonies that are higher in the tank which are much darker orange.
Regards, Kevin

Hi Zack,
At least 9 hours. At 7 hours some corals will lose their color and turn brown. I haven't tried 8 hours, I just went from 7-9 hours. I currently run them for 10 hours but I haven't noticed any color improvement over 9 hours. HTH, Kevin
