Mushroom Corals (Family Discosomatidae)
Mushroom corals are some of the most common corals in the home aquarium. A few of the more common Genera are:
Actinodiscus Amplexidiscus Metarhodactis Orinia Paradiscosoma I believe the Actinodiscus (formerly described as Discosoma) is the one most often seen at the LFS. The array of colors and textures is almost endless. They tolerate light levels from NO fluorescents to 400W halides but will do best somewhere in between those extremes. They can reproduce quite rapidly by division. Care must be taken that they are not placed too close to other corals as they will sting and kill them. In low light they will expand greatly and in higher light they tend to me more compact in size. Occasionally they will detach themselves from the rockwork and drift in the current looking for a more suitable location. Most of their feeding requirements are met by direct nutrient uptake from the water. I would highly recommend this as a first coral as it is very hardy and easy to care for. In this picture there was originally just one mushroom but through division there is now a colony. This was over a period of 19 months. Regards, Kevin
