Copperband Being Handfed (Pics)

As some of you know, I am still trying to fatten up my 6 week old Copperband. It is still eating. Tonight it ate some small chunks of scallop out of my hand and I got lucky getting some pictures of the feeding.

Without looking? I didn't graduate to this level yet I found some oyster meat at my local supermarkets fish department.Usualy comes in a small plastic container prepacked.I just freeze it and break off some chunks when needed. My friend is also a fishmonger,so I get some really fresh stuff ,but prepacked one is not bad at all.I got to try this one handed photography some day

OK Chuck ...

You live in the Pacific Northwest (ON the bloody water if the map on Mapquest is correct), in the 2nd biggest oyster area of the US (if you believe all the "foodies") other than the Chesapeake Bay and you need to know where to find oysters!!!

The Food Channel (one of my guilty pleasures) just ran a special on how great pacific oysters are (they made me hungry, very hungry.... ) and you guys get cool, cool, cool ones that we don't have access to here in the East (I've had Pacific oysters once -- they were way yummy). You can probably get them at the fish counter of your local supermarket.

He is an absolutely faboulous fish! Feed him whatever he wants! And I'm pretty impressed that you can feed w one hand and shoot with the other as well!

Chuck, my Copperband has grown large on scallops, clams and frozen mysis.

Freeze some scallop and then cut it as small as possible (if your not already doing this). All the fish love it, especially the CBB. I also throw a frozen butter clam in a few times per week. As it slowly unfreezes, the CB is the only fish that can get its "beak" in the clam...and it loves it. As it opens, all the fish attack it.
It also eats mysis shrimp as it's third choice.

Thanks Doug ...

I will try mincing up the scallop better tonight like you suggest. I will throw in a clam in there too and let it open slowly so he can get his "beak" in there

Chuck, AHHH, this brings back such memories to me. My copperband was about the size of a quarter when I got it 2 years ago last December. Mine immediately ate frozen mysis shrimp. And that is all it has eaten except some frozen enriched brine shrimp now and then. Mine is about the fastest mysis shrimp shucker next to my pakistani butterfly.

Can I just ask how long you have had this fish?? I probably missed the thread you mentioned. I think you'll do just fine with this fish. Those are some very nice baby pics.

Sue

Definately a neat fish. I love this guy. I am hoping for the best. I have had him for a bit over 6 weeks now ... It just isn't fattening up that great, but it does eat every day. Tonight it ate some enriched brine shrimp after it ate some morsels of scallops ... I will feed some more in a few hours ... some more scallops. That has become my routine, although I am just now trying the scallops. I hear others have had success with fresh oyster meat too.

Wish me luck Thanks for the response.

For the mostpart, the Copperband is pretty much reefsafe ... Unless you like those tiny featherdusters, they will be gone in a flash ... oh, those aptaisia will be gone too

My SPS and Clams are just fine, the copperband only swims right on by ...

Thanks Zhenya, all of the encouragement helps a great deal

My copperband has been in with all my sps and clams and does like Chuck's, swims right on by. It will even hunt for that stray mysis shrimp that flows to inbetween the clams or will delicately pick a piece of food from between branches of the acropora. It has never attempted to pcik a clam or polyp from any of my sps or clams. My feather duster population is limited to only those it's mouth can't reach. Mine does like aiptasia as long as it is already picked off the rock and free floating.

Chuck, the copperband doesn't look pinched as some I have seen look. I think with feeding as you are doing it'll be fine.

I have couple of softies in the tank where my Chelmon r. is and he never looked at them, actualy he sometimes takes refuge under colts branches during lights out.For the time I have him,he only munched on those little feathers that Chuck mentioned and erradicated all Aiptasias.Personally, I would never got rid of that problem without this fish and I'm eternaly greatfull and will do anything I can to make him happy

I got home and fed the Copperband some morsels of scallops and some enriched brine shrimp (Hikari brand). I will again feed some scallop morsels later on

He is BEAUTIFUL and I'm sure your tank will be a fabulous home for him!

He doesn't look super skinny in the pics you have posted. And how many fish eat their dinner right off your fingertips? I'm sure he'll grow up to be fat n happy.

You're right Rebecca,

And how many people would make sure that their fish gets enough food? This is why I know Chucks fish will be just fine and fat in time
