Question Prizm Protein Skimmer in sump?

Hi everyone,

Well, I finally caved in a bought a 90g tank last weekend to replace my 35g. Currently, I am using a hang-on-the-back Prizm skimmer for the 35g, and it works great. I am thinking that when I set up my 90g, I could use my 35g as the sump tank and still use the Prizm as the skimmer in the sump tank. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

What size tank is the Prizm rated for? I thought it was for smaller tanks (<55). It might be a little small for the 90.

The prizm skimmer has a max rating for a 90g set up. The 90g plus the 35g sump tank will have a 125g total volume, but I have a down-draft skimmer that I might install in the main tank, aswell.

Thumbs up

You might still be OK . The sump will end up being only about half full , and with the sand and rocks in the reef it wont be a full 90 gallons...

IMO it would work for a while till you were able to upgrade but I would b doing it quick . I had a prizim on a 20 and wouldnt push it any further than that but like I said thats just my thoughts.

I have a 50gallon tank and my prizm skimmer sits on the back of my 20gallon sump/refugium. It works fine but the only problem you might have is water depth. What I mean is if you have a shallow sump the prizm doesnt work effectively. Where my prizm skims in the refugium part of the sump, the water level is about 2inches below the top of the tank. If you dont have a high enough water level, the skimmer might not operate. In sum, try to keep the water level in the skimmer section of your sump as high as possible.
