Best lights for a 50g
Currently i have 2-96 watt powercompacts. I would like to upgrade but i dont want to spin an arm an a leg. I was thinking to retrofit either one 175watt 1200-2000Kelvin(havent decided yet) or one 250 watt 1200-2000Kelvin(havent decided yet). I dont want to run any vhos in conjunction wiht the hylides. I only want one hylide. Will one either 175 watt or 250watt hylide be suffecient if they were a higher Kelvin? 175 seems to low because I would be loosing watts in comparsion to my 192watts of pc which i currently have. However 250watts seems maybe an over kill or too hot. Oh yeah my tank is 3feet long by 20inches high. Last thing, can I by hylides at homedepot? Thanx.

Hi Gabe!
Personally, I would either go with a 250w DE 10k halide and I think others will chime in and suggest a 400w 20k Radium. I like the look of just the 250w 10k but the pictures I see of the 20k Radium look nice too; they are pretty blue.

I've been running a 250wt on my 65 with pc's for about 1.5yrs. The 250 only raises the tank temp. about 3 deg. I've been running a 65k but am going with a 10k very soon. I know a 400 would be good but I felt for the money the 250 was best. Hope this helps.
