Caught a 6 foot long worm in my tank!

After loosing more and more zoos/ricordia, I finally found the culprit with a little night time viewing. Today I spent all day taking apart my reef to get him. Here he is in all his glory....

Holly c**p!!!!This is one enormous worm.Is this a Eunicid type worm, Steve?
How in the world did you wrestle it out from your tank,I would not believe that it went piecefully
Sorry for all the questions, but will you keep it?It has got to be the world largest worm I think.BTW,great pics of the head and body of the worm.

Holy cow!!

I can't believe it. I would have never thought something like that would come out of a tank. That thing is huge.

What size of a tank do you have and how long have you had it set up?

Dr Ron over at RC did think it was a Eunicid worm. All my rock structure is elevated above the sand with a 3/4 inch PVC platform. It was in this platform tubing that he lived. I had to remove all the rock and lift the platform out of the tank...once on the garage floor, he was easy to get out of the PVC tubing.

That was some job you had to do Steve. All that rock in your huge tank,oh boy Atleast you got him out.Whatever you deside to do with him,you sure hold the record for catching the biggest worm in aquarium.
Thanks for sharing pics and your experience.

Here's a not so clear pic of how he was livingin the PVC pipe. You can see how he was able to escape detection. Every night, he would pop out ,eat zoos/ricordia and then...back in the pipe.

YUCK!

Just looking at that worm gives me the creeps.

Did you get your tank put back together? As I recall, it was probably the most beautiful reef tank I've ever seen.

The tank is back together after an all day effort. Of course, the aquascaping has changed a little and I took the opportunity to trim back some corals. I don't know what I'll do with him. He's in a bucket in the garage for tonight. Maybe I'll make a belt out of him...or maybe some boots...

Very clever beast indeed, making most of his situation and utilizing PVC to make a home out of it.Grew well on zoos and ricordea diet.I thought I had a nice size worm at about 8" but realize now that it's just a baby.Looking at your worm makes me want to wear gloves every time I need to do something in the tank.I think I'm going to hunt mine down as well,no need for it in the reef tank I think, maybe in a dedicated tank but not in a reef tank with all the corals and fish

Steve,
That must've been the job from Hades. What do you do with all the frags? Did you have some help at least lifting out all that rock? I hope I never see one of those in my tank! Is it a Pacific species?

Regards,
Kevin

Kevin, It was a job that I hope to never have to do again. My rock was in about 12 buckets and I was by myself..the corals went mostly to the sump and refugium...but, it was still a mess. I spent most of today reattaching the corals and trying to get the tank back to its former glory. Oh.... yes, it is a Pacific species...better get the flashlight out.
