Help with Cup Coral.
My LFS has a specimen about 5" in diameter. It has nice polyp extension around the outer inch or so of the cup. The center portion is a beautiful green with just a couple of stray polyps. I'd love to get this but am a bit concerned that the lack of polyps in the central portion of the cup may mean problems.
Do any of you have any experience with a cup coral like this? Any random thoughts? |

Wich cup coral you mean exactly?I know some people call Turbinaria renifrmis a cup coral and some other call a Turbinaria peltata a pagoda cup coral. Do you have a pic of it you can post?
Here's some of mine for reference, first one is a renifirmis.

Sorry, don't know the scientific name. Following is a photo (or a link to a photo-depending on how this works).
I bought this yesterday. It had been at the LFS for a couple of months. I liked this one in particular because of the exposed green center. |

I'm not a pro at this but I'll try
After you finished with your reply just bellow that window is a 'browse" button.Click that and it should pop up a new window with the folders from your computer.Find the one where the file with your pic is stored and double click that,in the small window in front of the "browse" button you'll see a path to the directory where your pic is.All you have to do now is click submit yor reply button and that should do the trick I just hope I did not screw up anything. Make sure your file size is of appropriate size(you should see a size allowed on the same page where you type your reply. I hope it helps and not making it worse,I've been known to do this to people ![]() If not, some of the mods will chime in and correct me if I screwed up.Ninong? ![]()

I see it,I see it
It appears to be a Turbinaria, probably peltata. Nice looking too and has good polyp extension.I love the color as well. I kept mine in a strong but indirect flow and medium light with success.never really attempted to feed it directly, just some GP and other small particular foods in the water column. BTW, I think the coral looks healthy and I wouldn't be too much consern of the luck of polyps in the middle. JMO ofcourse. PS. I don't see any damage in the tissue or any other problems,I would buy it if I were looking for one ![]()

As zhenya says, it looks like a very nice Pagoda coral. The polyp extension is good, and the clear area in the center doesn't indicate any problems.....it's just free of polyps. I've never seen one that color before.
I kept mine on the sand bed, with moderate current and moderate light. I never fed it specifically. Good luck with it. |
