Question Clams/Lighting

I want to try clams but I do not know if my lighting is sufficient.
I have 7 140 watt VHOs over a 200 gal system. Is this sufficient?

Thanks,

VTEC SI

Am surprised no one has answered you.

I am not a expert on lighting but will try to answer your question. It's not the watts that count but the par or intense lighting to penitrate the water depth.

I think you could try a squamosa or deresa with no problem. I wouldn't try a crocea or maxima though...JMO

I would think you could have a Derasa without any problems. We used to have two Derasa's under 220W of PC in our 30. They are much happier under 660 of VHO in our 75! We have 2 Derasa and 4 Maxima under VHO. Most will tell you that you should have MH to keep Maxima. I would say generically that is correct, but I will also say that I know a number of people that have been VERY sucessful in VHO only settings.

A couple of other things to consider...

How old is your tank?
What else is in your tank?
What is your equipment set like? (Ca Reactor, Nielson Reactor, etc.)

Clams are a wonderful thing! I just will we had a bigger tank for more of them...

I think you will be fine with derasa and squamosa. I also think you could keep a maxima as long as it isn't more than 12-15" below the lights. I have derasa, maxima, squamosa and one crocea all showing excellent growth under VHO's.

Gotta follow the latest question because you have plenty of lighting for all but the most demanding species if your tank is shallow enough.

Please post depth and even the K rating of the tubes. It would seem testing of some VHO combo's produce much greater output then others.

Best of luck.

vtec si-
980W VHO @ about 5-6000 lumens per tube should be equivalent to the intensity of 2-250W MH. The type of bulbs whether actinic or full spectrum( <10K) will determine the Par values. I would think that you could keep all of the above including a Maxima. Crocea might be a problem. Do you have a picture of your tank? adam

superswimmer-
you should be able to keep a Derasa or possibly a Squamosa. I have 96W power compacts on a tank I maintain. If you keep the clam high in the water column it should be OK. Start with a Derasa. Some are quite nice! Adam
