Talking SPS under VHO? A picture is worth a thousand words...

I took some new pictures last night of Paul Ifkovits' VHO-only Oceanic 120G.

I had originally photographed Paul's tank about six months ago- and wanted to see what the growth looked like. Paul runs 660 watts of VHO over his 120, using 2 each: AquaSun, Actinic 03, and Actinic white URI bulbs.

I was blown away by the growth in this tank! His stylophora had gone from the size of a lady's fist to a 10" wide cluster. The tri-color Acropora is about to grow out of the water, and his purple Robusta is holding color very nicely. He has added a couple of SeaSwirls to eliminate the dead spots, and has a dimmer that simulates storms and sunrise/sunset on his ICECAP 660. (He has two)

thats a sweet tank and no doubt vho's work-any light will work.

for my personal taste though-that just about the ugliest,no, it is the ugliest lighting on the best tank ive seen.:eek3:

i'm sure it's the camera. Using URI lamps don't give that lighting color. Great looking tank. i use mh now but URI's on a 66o ballast give excellent results.
    great post!
bring this one up to the top.

What URI lamps did you use? The AquaSuns are the pink ones. Actinic white gives totally different results.

This is three actinic whites and one actinic URI:

Paul also runs a dimmer, which is a lot of what threw this photo-shoot off a bit. When dimmed to partial intensity, the pink and actinic look even more unreal.

There is no doubt that SPS can be kept under VHO's. The tank looks great! The reason I like MH's is that it looks more natural.

I do, too. I have (literally) thousands of watts in halides, and only 440-watts of VHO.

I do find it interesting to check out tanks where someone has done something different, though.

.... so many ways to reef...
