Effect of prolonged out of water MH Exposure (Pic)

Last Thursday (3/6/03) I came home to a return pump that had stopped pumping, therefore the tank water was about 2" lower than normal exposing many of my corals to direct MH lighting while out of the water.

This picture is 3 days after the exposure. You can see the white remnants of my beautiful Pocillapora ... I am going to try and catch a picture every couple of days to see how it recovers. Wish me luck.

Bummer,
What's with this pumps lately? Are polyps still extending on the burned sections?I sure hope it recovers nicely for you. It is a beautiful piece. I think if tissue is still there it should recover in your tank.

When it rains, it pours, what can I say? This was my sump return pump that must have had something clog the inlet and the Iwaki shut down ... it has been working ever since ... But of course damaged many coral in the process

Hi Mtn
Accidents happen but hopefully every thing that was effected will recover.
This happened to a friend of mine that has a dominated sps 400 gallon reef system a few years ago.
Many of the tip area's of the corals bleached and there was a fair amount that had tip tissue loss.
Most of the tip bleached corals recoverd but a couple went on to lose the tissue which he treated the same way as the corals that had tip tissue loss.
The main problem for the corals that had tip tissue loss was diatoms and algae took over faster than tissue regrowth happened and on some there was further tissue ression.
He cut off the tissue damaged tips and these corals then had tissue regrowth over the break as you would get when you frag a branch.
A few continued to lose tissue and he stopped that by sealing the removed tip area with super glue this stopped the tissue ression on these ones.
In all he lost three coral out of about 30 corals that had been exposed out of water to the metal halides.

I hope every thing recovers with no problems I just thought the expearence of what happend to my friend may help if any coral does not start recovering.

Best of luck
Regards
Martyn

Thanks for the info Martyn, I already have clipped off the tops of some of the coral to get them to grow as if I fragged them. I have tried super glue in the past on the edges but it really hasn't helped that much, if it gets to that point I am sure I will try it again ...

Thanks again

Trying to get some good chronology photos of hopefully the healing process on this piece, so here is a shot on day 4 from the top ... not my normal top down shots :eek1:

It also shows the extent of the damage on the top of this piece.

Chuck, can you see any new tissue growth right at the live tissue line to skeleton yet?? I am betting you will see some soon. To me that doesn't look as if it is going to do badly. If you get any of the algae stuff growing over it you may be able to gently brush it off with a toothbrush or something like that. I just think this is going to regrow for you.

Thanks Sue ... I will take another picture tomorrow to see how it looks in comparison. I can see some healing taking place already, along with some algae growth in some of the white areas ... Time will tell

Thanks again

Wow, that's a shame. What a beautiful piece!

That is my number one fear. A primary recirculating pump shut down, but I had not thought about just the pump stopping. I had thought of it as a power outage so the lights would be off too. What happened to you is worse!!

And here I am about to go on a fairly long trip with my tank in the hands of family members!!

I hope everything comes back completely for you.

By the way, Hi Sue from Sugar Land!

Mark

Chuck, Yeah, I bet you will see some regrowing goin' on soon. I think if the piece was going to do badly it would of started by now. The shock of being exposed, I think would of had the coral doing bad before now if that was the turn it was going to take.

Hi Mark....Saw your awesome new tank at Keith's saturday. Or should I say the almost completed set-up. I hope to get to see it in your house when it's done.

Now I can see my eyes were not tricking me. I thought I saw some lighter pink-ish hues in the second pic on some of the lower areas. Now I see that it must of been new growth or the tissue regenerating. Very, very cool...

Chuck, here I sit scrolling the last pic back and forth to the first. I'm trying to see if I can see any new areas of coloration. 9days is still new but I think the important thing is this coral didn't go into an RTN event or something like that. I think like Minh said in 2 months it will be completely healed. Your seeing it every day must be hard to have an objective eye. You want to see new growth so bad.

Anyway, keep the pics coming at several day intervals. I like to see the good endings.

Thats kind of what I was thinking....this coral was burned like it was an probably 8 out of 10 that had this happen would of gone ahead and RTN'd. This one didn't and I fully believe it is because your system is so healthy. Albeit you did have some RTN going on, this coral didn't and I sure don't think it would ever do that by this late date.

Chuck, this belongs on some slide show or something as it is a success story for sure.
