Talking I Have Chitons!!!!!!!!!

SO, lately, I haven't been doing much onthe tank, been busy with other interests. I was actually seriously considering breaking it down, since all that is really in there are a couple of damsels.

Last night, I had occasion to happen close to the tank for a minute.

HOLY CHITONS BATMAN!!!!!! I have known I had at least 2 in there for a couple of years, I had spotted them at various times.

LAst evening, I counted about 10 all along the sandline (and slightly below), ranging in size ftom about 1/2 cm to 1 cm as the largest.

The older ones I had spotted at various times (the parents) are approx 3/4 of an inch at last spot.

WOOT!!!!!

Tanks not coming down now, infact, this week, she's gonna get a bunch of work!@!

Just thought I'd share.

Good for you!

Whenever my interest would start to wane, I would add a new creature or find someting new in the tank I hadn't seen before, and my interest level would immediately increase.

WOW!! The mantle on that one is really huge. THe bony plates seem almost vestigial.

Mine are white W/ little red corraline looking spots on their plates and mantles. Adult size for them seems to be about an inch or so.

Your's is Huge-

Cool!

I had at least one in my tank, but I haven't seen it in months. I wish it would come out during the day sometime.

What is a Chiton? Are they beneficial to the tank? How big do they get and what, or who, do they eat?

Thanks,
CaptK

chitonsare small molusks with overlapping plates of shell .they feed predominantly on microalgea..usually the worst they do is eat some coralline .they can also reproduce rather quickly in some cases.

I actually had a population explosion of Chitons a while back. (if you do a search for Chitons Boom!!! it should come up). I still have what I consider a lot (any time you look at the tank you are bound to see 2 or 3 on the glass - dozens at night) but they don’t seem to be causing any harm and my coralline seems to be able to grow at a rate that is at least steady with the rate that it gets eaten.
