blenny compatibility
I've been thinking about adding a midas blenny, or some other type of blenny to my 46 gallon reef. The main thing I am concerned about are some of the other fish bothering it or chasing it. Right now I have a 3" maroon clown who really isn't very aggressive... doesn't chase anything. But then there's my purple tang... he's about 4 or 5 inches and likes to chase the fridmani pseudochromis every chance he gets. The pseudochromis doesn't seem aggressive at all, but then again he's the smallest fish in the tank... about 3" long but as you probably know they're quite a skimpy fish. So I guess I'm just worried about the tang going after a blenny if I put one in the tank. What do you guys think?

He might go after the blenny, but the blenny can take care of itself by spending most of its time in an inexcessable place. I have a yellow shrimp goby (who is divorced from his pistol shrimp) who lives under a rock in the corner. He comes out to eat and look around, but quickly retreats when another fish comes near. Rather unchaseable. I imagine the blenny would act similarly.

Midas blennies have been know to eat soft corals and polyps, and the mantles of clams. If it is just a beautiful blenny you want, go with the Forktail Blenny. They do have fangs, but only for defense. It will keep them from being harrassed. They are strictly herbivores, and they are very peaceful, very relaxing, very beautiful fish to watch.
My last one jumped out, and I'm wanting another badly. Can you tell?? HTH

Thanks for the input wrassman.... I'm glad you chimed in with that info, I wasn't aware that the midas was a nipper! Yes I am definitely looking for some type of blenny... not necessarily a pretty one, just one that is fun to watch and easy to care for. I wouldn't mind having another algae blenny, I'm just hesitant to buy one because my last one was a very picky eater. I was always under the impression that these just ate primarily algae and pods that were in the tank, but after talking with a guy at my lfs, he told me that they should eat just about anything including frozen and flake food. I just want to get a blenny that eats regular food. My main tank has very little to offer as far as algae goes. I was looking at the midas because they are supposed to eat meaty foods.
