We tore it down....

And put it right back up.

Our tank was infested with a red macro algae and it wasn't getting any thinner. On Friday, I tore the tank apart and scrubbed off all of the macro algae and put ot back together. Our filters in our RO/DI unit had become exhausted which was probably mainly the cause. Today when I received our new TDS meter, the RO/DI water was coming out at 65ppm. I replaced the sediment, carbon and DI filters and it is now producing at 5. The RO membrane could probably be changed too so that will be a purchase soon.

This post is a reminder how quickly our tanks can become algae boxes when the water isn't taken care of. If you don't have a unit, get one and if you do have a unit, routinely check the output!

Regards,
Scott Z.

Scott, so sorry to hear you had that problem. Your so right about things like this happening and it is a good reminder for us to keep our equipment in optimum working condition.

That said I don't have an ro/di unit as my friend and LFS owner, Keith Gay of Aquatic Designs helps me in the water change dept. He has one of the nicest stores in Houston and has a large maintenance business also. I know how much he fusses with his equipment so that it is in top working shape.

Yeah it was a lot of work that could have been avoided, that's for sure. During the cleaning event, the sand bed got a bit stirred up and that had an effect on some of the corals but I think they will bounce back just fine.

You know, all of the equipment we use should be routinely maintanenced/cleaned. The lights should have the salt creep removed, skimmers need to be cleaned, filters need to be cleaned/replaced, etc. It can be frustrating but it is well worth it in the long run.

Regards,

Scott, hope all works itself out for ya.
I don't have a regular schedule for cleaning , it just happens when it does.
You can tell when things need attention
