Xenia Filtration
Does anyone use large colonies of Xenia for filtration in their system? I have heard of this before but not first hand and wanted to see if anyone had any experience with it. If colonies of Xenia can be used for natural nitrate reduction, wouldn't it be easy enough to put some in refugiums?
Just thinking outloud, Scott Z. |

I have more than 200 colonies in my tank and refugium. I remove 35-50 at a time (flush ...er I mean burial at sea
)Regards, Kevin

One need to be really careful with this method of filtration. Xenia can crash overnight and wipe out a tank. This happen often if you let the Xenia mass get too large.

Kevin/Minh,
How about in a sump that kind of "acts" like a refugium? Mine is a 20G long that is divided into sections. One has the pump, the other (which the overflow from the main system feeds into) has a DSB, LR and some macro algae. That side is lit 24/7 with one of those Lights of America strips you get at Home Depot. I think mine is 60 watts?? Could you put Xenia in there and get them to live ? Rebecca |

I think Xenia only thrive in high light. It will live in other condition but will grow very fast if you give it high light intensity.
You can alway put a colony there and see what happen. i always advice people with Xenia not to keep too much of it in their tank as it can cash and tank out a tank over night. Minh
