How long to wait?
Hi All!
As you may know, we recently went through an event in our tank and lost some corals. The problem was an infestation of macro algae due to too much dissolved solids in the water. In order to get the algae out of the tank, we tore it apart and scrubbed the rock. The disurbance of the sand bed and less than prestine water conditions caused some of our SPS to bleach out. This was about 1.5 weeks ago and now the tank and inhabitants are doing fine. The corals that survived are doing good and the fish are doing good. All water parameters are good (~1 nitrate) ca and alk are a little low but coming up. After something like this has happened to you, how long have you waited to add some new corals? Do you wait out a certain period or let the tank and livestock conditions dictate your move? Thanks, Scott Z. |

Scott,
it sounds like it is time for a new skimmer. that should reduce those dissolved solids. I like to have a stable enviroment before i add more to my tank. if you feel that every thing is stable, add more if not, you might wait til things get better. how are the frags doing from the trade? jonboy |

Hey Jon!
Everything from the swap is doing fine. The frag I got from you is really starting to purple up on the tips, pretty deep purple too. The tri-color from Terry is doing well as are the one's I got from Todd. Remeber that chocolate colored one that I got from Todd and took back blue? He gave me another one and it is already blueing up.
![]() Everything doing ok that you got? Regards, |

How large is your system? I would run carbon or other adsorbent after a major overhaul like that. If your system has stabilized and chemistry is back to normal 2 weeks sounds fine to begin adding livestock slowly again. Most of the problem was probably from releasing toxins when you scrubbed your rock. This is similar to having a 'recuring' process.
I agree w/ the previous post. A good skimmer is in order and regular nutrient export w/ harvests. Adam |

Well boys,
I got some totally awesome colonies last week. I'll get the camera out tomorrow if I remember and take some pics. One colony that I got is like a teal, about 7' big and the other is a branching, sorta dark teal with super lite blue tips. I am watching for another kind of coral on my list and will snag it for the next frag swap. So...I'll have some extremely nice stuff to swap with at the next one. |
