Briistle worms??

Watching my tank at night, I have noticed some worms. Most of them are clear whitish body's with redish-pinkish colored heads on them. Most of those guys seem to be about 1" or less.
I also have seen 1 REALLY big one. It is bright orange in color and seems to be about 2 feet long. It looks like it has tons of little feet on it. It really doesnt like the flash light.
Any idea's on that? Should I get him out of there(if I can get him)???

There is something in my tank that eats my snails. I had a bi-color blenny turn up missing. The last time I saw the blenny it had a big chunk taken out of its back, Like something bit him? Could the big worm do anything like that? I will get a pic is I can.....
Any help would be greatly appreciated.....

Thanks,
Matt

Bristleworms are very helpful. In my tank I have at least 50 and they devour any food that falls on the rocks or sand. The one that's 2 feet might be something else because I have never heard of one that big. You don't want them taking over your tank but having them is not bad.
All IMHO.

There is a type from the Caribbean that can be a pest and danger. If your rock is from Florida there is the possibility you could have one of these. More likely they are of the Pacific variety and perfectly harmless. They are detritus and algae eaters. Here are a couple of pictures of the Pacific types.

HTH,
Kevin

The only "bad" bristle worms such as Hermodice carunculata are red in color. They have been known to feed on clams, corals, and even kill sleeping small fish from time to time. Beware the red bristle!
Keep the faith,
Augustus

Thanks for all the relpy's....
How big should they get? The big orange one is kinda scary looking. Could he be the one that is eating the snails?
How would I get that big orange one to come out from the rocks? I want to get him out of there.....

I can't remember who it was but they were on this board. They had a way to remove unwanted worms. They sawed a piece of live rock in half, hollowed it out, and baited it, making a trap. I don't have the tools for such an undertaking however, in theory it would work. Simply pull the rock out in the morning and you sould have worms o plenty. They mostly feed at night, you might try an old fashioned cup trap w/ some krill in the bottom or such. I've also heard of mantis traps catching a worm or two. Good luck.
Keep the Faith,
Augustus

In honor of bristleworms, I'd say we find one, hold on in our hands, then squeeze....and see how long we can hold on...
