I don't remember setting up a tank being that hard. I must be getting old
I put a DSB in and it looks great. I'll try to get a pic up as soon as I get the lights for it. As it stands, I just have a small light on the fuge that I'm leaving on 24/7. How long should I cycle? I used some water from the 20 to kick start things. I'm excited about getting it up to speed.Keep the faith, Augustus

Yes it was, but there is a lot of new material in the 55. DSB, 85% new water etc. Should there be no cycle time. I was only able to keep about 5 gal of "old" water?

I would let I cycle for at least a week if not 2 just to let it settle in some.
Did you add any new live rock? |

you dont have to wait at all-i would go ahead an makt the switch -the bacteria you ned is contained in the substrate -not the water.and if you transfer the contents of a smaller tank into a bigger one-youll be keeping all the bacteria you need for youre present load.

I'd say err on the side of caution though. Test the water if you don't find any ammonia or nitrites then go ahead. I'd wait a week before you started piling the fish on in there. If your going to add new LR I would add it now too, before you started putting fish in there. Might as well do everything at once.

i set up my 90 in my new house. it was new sand. i filled it with new water and dropped in about 35 lbs of LR i had curing in a tank in the garage. then i took everything out of my old 38 and put it in buckets. i drained part of the 90. between the buckets of animals and the additional buckets of water from the 38, i had enough water and rock to get things going. this all was done in one day! here's the tank after 8 months:

Thank you all for the input. I think I'll give it a week just to settle in. I ordered the lights and should be able to show a pic soon. BTW beautiful tank electric! I'm getting a 260 w coralife pc system. What do you think that will be able to handle in a 55?

why would 85% new water cause a cycle?if you have enough bacteria to keep up with the current load-which you would if you moved the contents of a smaller tank to a bigger tank-you wont see a cycle.
the bacteria is in the substrate -not the water been there ,done that a couple times-no problemo mi amigo's besides -i bet hes got everyhting moved in by now........ so how are things looking ceaser? |

Alls well! I moved Tasslehoff (clown) in after a week or so and he's fine. I have not moved the polyps yet as the lights are not yet in the canopy but the pc's are just waiting on me. I thank all of you for the response.

Organic, I too was a Dragonlance and d&d nut. I read all of the dragonlance books! I'm proud to stand beside a fellow reefer with such good taste in literature
I'll keep everyone updated on the system and post some pics when possible.Keep the Faith, Augustus
