calcium
Does anyone use the Sea Test calcium test? I know it isn't a high quality test, but i just bought it initially to get started with. The problem is I can't get a reading. I've gone over the instructions several times and I know I'm doing it right. Basically you mix the stuff then start dropping the drops, stirring inbetween each drop until it changes to a bright blue. You then multiply the # of drops by 15 and that gives you the reading. I can't get the color to change at all. I'm using instant ocean salt mix so there has to be calcium in the water not to mention rock and sand. also when should i start dosing calcium?

If you have a calcium additive add one drop to the test vial that way you know you have some calcium in there. The test kit should change color if it doesn't then your kit is bad.
Additions of calcium aren't required unless you have calcium-requiring corals (IMO). if you are planning to add corals a level of around 400ppm - +20ppm works well. You will also need to test your alkalinity levels as they work with lighting to allow stoney corals to achieve good growth rates. I shoot for a level of 2.8-3.0 meq/L for alkalinity. I use Salifert test kits. Regards, Kevin
