I am looking for some suggestions for a few fish for my new tank,it is a 110 gallon. My daughter has her heart set on a Tear Drop Butterflyfish ,I do believe they will be problems in a reef tank.I really do not want a yellow tang,I have considered some other tangs, but I want something DIFFERENT, something maybe unusual,at least one fish that is not so popular. How does a Tear drop do with corals? I really want her to have that 1 fish, that is really all she has asked for as far as fish go.What corals do they usually eat? I welcome any all suggestions.
Thank You, David p.s. This is my first BIG tank.I am in the process of cycling it now So I have lots of time to figure this all out.Last edited by saltwaterdave; 05-12-2003 at 08:59 PM. |

What about a school of green chromis that would look nice. Maybe a pair of black ocerlaris not everyone has one of those. I bet she would like a mandarin you'd have to wait for the tank to mature but they are pretty cool looking. HTH

Chaetodon unimaculatus or Teardrop Butterfly, according to Scott Michael, is "perhaps the most destructive species of butterflyfish to house in a reef aquarium. Will eat corals, anemones mushroom anemones, and they may even pick at crustaceans."
It is rated 3/5 for hardiness, which means special care must be provide. I would not put this fish in a new tank, especially a reef tank. You better stay away from this fish if you want a reef tank. Your daughter will need to learn that certain fish is not suitable for reef tank. Regarding rare, beautiful and unusual fishes usually almost always means difficult to keep fishes. You need to buy a good fish book and read up on them. I suggest Marine Fishes: 500+ Essential-To-Know Aquarium Species by Scott W. Michael This book is about $15.00 which is much less than the price of one fish. Also it is a way to point out to your daughter other beautiful fishes out there that can be keep in a reef tank, as well as help you out in term of choose, and care for your fish. You will have to have some tangs to control algae in your tank. How about this A. japonicus that I have. It is not an easy fish either but it is very beautiful fish and very reefsafe, in addition to being useful in a reef tank. Minh Nguyen

Those are really some great suggestions; a school of green chromis really doo look great! On the list of tangs, the Powder Blue and Achillies tang are amung my favorites but require extra care and outstanding conditions. If you are into butterfly's, Copperbands are very beautiful and for the most part, are reef safe.
Hey, about 10 Blue Damsels would be very cool too! ![]() Ok, not really but I thought you might get a laugh. |

In addition to Chelmon rostratus you might comsider a Chelmon marginalis, wich looks very similar to the copperband but missing the center bar.
Hey Scott,I do have a school of green chromis in my 75g tank(6 of them) ![]()

Dave,
How about some of the more unusual clowns -- like th Maldives (A. Nirgripes) or the black percs. You can get both of these tank raised from Dr. Mac and Sons. There are LOTS of really cool, unusual reef-safe wrasses available. The Marine Center has a really good selection. My favorites are either the flasher wrasses or the Hawaiian Flame wrasse. You could have a trio of the flashers (1 male and 2 females) or a pair of the flame. http://www.themarinecenter.com You can also have a small group of anthias. I love my flathead. It's not as common as some of the other types. All of the above would be compatible with a mandarin if you wanted to add one down the road. Planning a new tank is always fun. Rebecca |

To be honest we are having a blast looking at all the different fish and corals that we want. But the best thing is we already have a 30 gallon reef to look at,so that keeps us busy while we plan this one out I or should I say we, were very patient setting up the 30 gallon, but to be honest it is hard when you have such a large upgrade!!!But do not worry we are not gonna rush anything!!!!!My daughter is 8 and has surprised me by how much she has learned and pays attention to what I tell her,she can look at quite a few different fish and corals and can identify them with ease!!! I was quite impressed on a trip to the lfs when she took an elderly lady around telling her about the different corals and fish. She really understood about the butterfly that she wanted even though being a bit upset. The mandarin is a defniately must have fish for us.I have been tempted to put one in the 30 as I have plenty of pods for it to eat,but we are gonna wait until the new tank is ready for one, probally in about a year, really depends upon how the tank goes.Much of the 30 gallon is going into the 110.I have even fragged our trumpet coral, gonna put one piece in and see how it goes and then proceed from there. Thank you all for your suggestions and keep'em coming!!! David |
