Clam jumped off of reef edge

I have a Gold Maxima about 1"-11/2" long. He's still a baby. I've had him for about 2-3 months now and he has been growing. I recently moved all of my live stock from my 55 gallon tank to my new 120 gallon tank about a month ago. He was in a certain spot on live rock about mid level in the tank and aprox. 18 inches from a 175 watt Ushio and a 400 watt Radium for the 3-4 week term and was attached to the rock. 2 days ago while I was peering through at him he was moving around and then I saw the biassel (spell?) threads pull off the rock. He then just opened back up, like he was and was enjoying the light. Last night when I got home he was on the sand bed. I then picked him back up and set him on a different spot on the reef at about the same height - 10 minutes later he bailed off of that spot. Then I just set him on the sand bed. Do you think he just wanted to be closer to my 5" Squamosa so they could make sweet love (JK) ? What do you think he's doing?

Hi Chris,

How was the current at that spot? It could've been that he was recieving too much of it there and just desided to bail?
Just thinking outloud

I do have quite a bit of current down that way but nothing that is a forceful direct type. I have a Rio Hyperflow 20 blowing from the opp. end toward that end running about 3/4 flow rate (1700 gph) and my returns are about 700-800 gph each, one blowing toward the Rio and one Xing in front and angle toward the same end as the Rio.

It was just a thought,Chris.
It's hard to pinpoint the actual reason but I think that the clam was not quite happy there and this is why it jumped. Another thought is that its foot might be irritated by something on that rock? I think you have enough light to keep it on the sand though and I would just leave it there, for awhile anyway.

Chris, I agree with Gene. When I've had clams that bailed off of where "I" thought they should be and it ended up being that they were not happy in that spot. If it doesn't do anything but nestle into the sand I'd just leave it there. My 180 is situated so that one long piece of LR is so that the clams are on it mid way up on one side and their mantles do not even move in current, but check all the sps out and their polyps sway in the breeze. Please don't ask me how I got it to work out like that.

LOL,Sue

How did you get it done? I think I have problems with the flow and clams in my 75 as well. The maxima I got from Barry keeps turning away from it but had not jumped yet. I hope it stays put as I have no room on the sand either

I have most of my clams in clam half shells. These half shells are attached to that long piece of LR. They attach to the half shell they sit in. I can't place any of my clams on the sand bed cause then my copperband thinks they really are "clams on the half shell". They have to stay in the rocks and this copperband will pick mysis shrimp from inbetween the clams but not even touch them. Why the difference in where they are I have no idea.

Gene, I really don't know how the current thing worked out. Honest...
