Power Head
In my 75 gal. reef I currently run two Hagan Aquaclear 402 & one 301
(being used to flow across the back off the tank) The PH are connected to a Wave Master Pro set on reef mode. My return is through a quiet one pump piped with 3/4" pvc run wide open. One of my 402 is not putting out what it use to, I am considering getting an 802 PH. The 402 flow without air is 270 GPH and the 802 is 400GPH. This would be placed to flow across the front of the tank. I am showing my tank the 802 would be just over the Maximas on the left the right side is getting a Deresa on Friday. Just wondering if this would be to much flow in the tank.

I don't really think that 670 gal/hr would be considered too much flow for your tank. Of course it all depends on the needs of the specific corals that you have in your tank, but i would venture to say that you would have to try pretty hard to get "too much" flow. As long as your tank isn't one giant cloud of sand you should be ok.
Just my 2 cents though. What is the gph rating for your return pump?

I personally like 2 smaller power heads compared to one larger that way you have more choice on flow over the tank and no torent going in one direction.
But to awnser your question NO I dont think it would be to much flow. On my 80 LPS tank I have 2-MJ1200@290gph each, 2-MJ900@230gph each and 1 Mj600@160gph and am contiplating add anther 900 I have around or replacing the 600 with the 900 for a little more. |

I had the 802's on a wave master. The starting and stoping just killed the impellers. I went from great water flow to no water flow within four months. I have switched to the maxi-jet power heads and now have no problems.

I agree with Christopher, the starting and stopping can be hard on a powerhead but maxi-Jet's seem to handle it the best. I would consider going with MJ 1200's over the 802.

I concour, the HAgens are great for Constant on operations, but the starting ans stopping tears them up, they also seem to lose there uumph after a while... My friend Matt has the MAxi Jet 1200 on his CPR overflow and it does great keeping the air out, mine is connected to a 402 and it does not pull ANY air out... I'm going to try a new impellar first, then go with a MAxi jet if that fails...
My 2 cents, Mike |
