I've heard people say that you sould always keep a 6 line wrasse if you keep clams. Is this so? Do they really "defend" them?

No, I have about 35 clams in my tank. I have a 6-line wrassse but I still have to manually remove snail. 6-line is not big enough to turn clams over to look for snail. But a larger wrasse will be able to - and your clams will not like it.

So get a six line because it is an inexpensive, pretty fish that is reef safe. But don't count on it to get completely rid of all of your pyramid snails.

I agree-
A six-line is a nice addition but is an adjunct to regular clam health maintenance.

So you have to go in and manually take the snails off? What if the clam has anchored its self? And how do you get them off? What do pyramid snails look like? I know they are bad for clams.

Yes, they have to be manually removed. If anchored, use a turkey baster to blast them off and then remove they from the substrate.
If you do a search, you'll find pics of parasitic snails. Adam

This is the snails I removed from my smaller Gigas about a month ago. I take clams out every week to inspect them and remove all the pyramids I can.

Here's the pic of the snails

PS. My six-line is not really doing a whole llot in controlling the snails either but I see him inspect the clams for an easy meal (snails that is).

Thanks for the input! When I get a clam, I'll give you all the heads up, so you can lend your knowledge. Thanks,
Augustus
