Amazing Turquoise Stag w Purple Tips
Hey Gang,
This is a piece of Purple Tip stag that Shawn Bennet gave me a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to share the amazing colors it has turned while being outside. It is encrusting on it's base well. I mounted it inversely of the direction is was originally growing. And I am starting to see some upturned tips. On a smaller frag (about 3") I mounted it upside down standing up. The side facing the sun has already grown all new polyps facing upward. The under/back sides of both these corals is still brown with purple tips. I was at Shawns the other day and the mother colony which is about 18" tall and 2' across has a little bit of green with Actinic on the stalks, with nice purple tips. Since I have no Actinics I get none of the green. But boy did I pull out the blues !!!! |

Another Shot
Here is another angle of it.
These photos were taken top down, outside, after the sun had gone down. No Actinics, No Flash, no photoshop edits (Other than Crop and size) Dave |

so -since you now have exp with both artificial and natural light-what do you think brings out the best colors in youre corals-spectrum (as in radiums/20k etc)-or shear intensity?

Sun and Radiums
I am not particularly fond of the 20k bulbs. I find them too blue for my taste. I like the colors they produce, but I think a mix is more pleasing to my eye.
However I am getting corals to color up, that are being donated by people that have upto 1600w of Radium. I am getting colors in the sunlight that they can't come close to. And so far, things that have colored up in the sun, that I moved into my display tank which is a 125 w (2) 250w AB HQI. Things have been holding the color well. I put a small piece of this purple stag that went Turquoise in my display tank last week and it is still holding it's color. I am going to experiment with a piece of glass on one side to see if I can get my tri-colors to darken back up. I do think one thing that makes a difference is the spread of light. The corals get sunlight from dawn until about 3pm. And since the light source is high and single point I get fantastic rippling light. But what is nice is that when you view the corals during the day, the light is evenly distributed all around the corals. Dave B |
