Holy Cow,
My lion finally took a silverside this morning. Charlie's been with me for about 5 months, and has refused dead food, up to now. He's gone up to three weeks without food and still refused anything but live food. This time, he's only been 1 1/2 weeks without, so I guess he remembered the last time? anyway it took him almost 45 minutes to swallow the silverside. Could this be because the frozen fish are not very limber when thawed? I hope this means he'll take silversides from now on. $16 worth of blue damsels each week or two is a bit expensive. He's worth it, and I would have continued to spend the money, but, hallelugiah, he ate today!!!! ![]() David ------------------ Don't think so much....it takes the fun out of life!!!! |

thats good to hear! if Charlie hasnt eaten in a while i would soak the food in selcon or zoe for a while to get him back inth swing of things, but since you said he's eating 16 bucks worth of Damsels a week , i'd say he's ok.....

Charlie is in no way hurting dietarily. He's only been 1 1/2 weeks without food this time. It was 2 months ago that I tried to feed non-living food to him, so I guess he forgot what it was, or just decided, that since he couldn't catch his tankmates, he'd better eat something.
I'm just glad he's eating silversides finally. Now my budget can relax a little bit...until I go to the LFS next anyway ![]() Thanks David ------------------ Don't think so much....it takes the fun out of life!!!! |

jadeclam why would you feed goldfish, dont you want to keep your fish as healthy as possible? did you know that the feeding of goldfish create a buildup of fatty acids in the fishes liver which eventually lead to death. If you want to feed live then it should either be live mollies or ghost shrimp...hth

Fishtechie,
Please keep in mind that mollies will cause the same FLD as goldfish. They may be able to be converted to saltwater, but they do not become 'saltwater fish'. Ghost shrimp, I believe, are the fresh water equivalent to marine shrimp, and probably will cause the same FLD. I do give Charlie a goldfish or two now and then, as a treat, but only after he has had plenty of marine food first. David ------------------ Don't think so much....it takes the fun out of life!!!! |

I,m not an expert in fish diet, however feeding lion fish a steady diet of goldfish is detrimental for the stated reasons. An occcasional goldfish as a treat wont hurt but may hinder efforts to modify feeding habits. If you do give feeders or ghost shrimp you can feed them with Selcon enriched foods so the lion will absorb more usable nutrition. Another mistake is to feed your lion constantly, in the wild they are oppurtunistic feeders that can swallow prey nearly there own size and frequently go for days between meals. Overfeeding will also lead to FLD and shorten your lions lifespan, FWIW

Fishtechie,
No, I don't have any documentation for that statement, but considering that ghost shrimp are fresh water, it stand sto reason that the same rule would apply. Doug1, I agree totally, and feed my lion once a week if he's lucky and looks like he needs fed. As long as his stomach is not shrunken in, I consider him well fed. Once a week is plenty for him at this size anyway. David ------------------ Don't think so much....it takes the fun out of life!!!! |

ok then why not feed it krill, after all if you were fed hamburger once a week with just the bread, and no lettuce, tomatoes or anything else that supplements vitamins in a burger, how would you feel, and how long do you think your life span would be....i bet it would be shorter than someone who was being fed vitamin enriched fish

I understand jade, remember, if i was a fish store and it cost me $1 to feed my fish goldfish opposed to $8 for some formula 1 or 2, i'd go with the buck too...

I go to great pains to keep my reef inhabitants healthy...witness the $16 a week for damsels. Would you have done that? As Charlie has just now started to eat non-living food, It's been rather difficult to change his diet much. As he is now eating frozen food, I can and will start feeding him other things, ie clam meat, mussel meat, uncooked shrimp, pieces of seafood...whatever I can get him to eat. Of course I'll supplement with vitamins. It just took him time to decide that non-living food is good too. [This message has been edited by nuff (edited 06-03-2000).] |

fishtechie,
emoticons suck for the most part....not enough emotion gets through...apology extended to you as well sir. I understand about the goldfish, and for a while that is all Charlie would take. Took no time to get him to take damsels, but was a long drawn out battle to get him to take anything else. If I am wrong about the ghost shrimp, please tell me, but being a nurse, I think things through differently than most folks. *gets me in trouble sometimes too LOL * (sorry didn't get the blonde joke LOL) misunderstandings can be such a pain.
