Cool

Why don't you add another hardy fish, sounds like you have enough bacteria to handle more fish, at least after 10 weeks you should be safe.

What do snails tell about water quality? I have never heard about that before. (yes, I am still relativly new to the hobby)

This may sound weird, but do you have snails? Just IMO snails are great indicators of water quality.

My take is that snails are very sensetive to a drop in water quality...I also keep a count of my snails along with the blue leg hermits...at leats I try to...also for this reason. But strangely enough in my case, the blue legs seem to be just a tad more sensetive.

Rob,
My guess would be you either missed the spike by testing every other day at first, or more likely, your ammonia test kit may be outdated or defective and by the time you verified with someone else your cycle had all ready taken place. As nitrates are last in the string, you had to have something make them.
