depending on how big they are(over 2") you shouldn't really have to feed them....Except for calcium.
I lost a 4" Maxima last week. I had him for 15 months. I had 2 bad test kits and my calcium fell very low(below 300ppm)I belive this had lots to do with the clams death.

... and which should be avoided ?!?

Am still trying to obtain a kit retail.

Still can't find a dealer in New York who will do anything but insist that alkalinity is the same as pH, and that all I need is the pH tester :-|

You crack me up Buddy!
It's not so much the kits themselves are bad...just that the agents go bad in time and can affect the results.

Only two test kits I trust for Ca: Salifert and La Mont(sp?). Always used the former and never heard a neg about later, well unless you ask Mark.

Salifert all the way.......I have used La Motte test kits for years at work(not fish related)They are great kits. I bought a La Motte calcium kit a few weeks ago, it has to be the worst kit I have ever used. The color change is BS.They really dropped the ball on this one.

Hey Staceon, did you get the "stuff"

I'll back Golfish 100% on the comment on the LaMotte Calcium kit - it really sucks.

As far as Alkalinity and Calcium, you cannot beat Salifert. I find their Magnesium kit indispensible as well. It is exactly the same in procedure as the Calcium kit, only the color change is to a smoke grey instead of blue. Color changes are definite and easy to discern!!!

Oh, sorry to stray,
I feed my clams good 10000K LIGHT. I have a blue max about 6" from the surface and a Derasa on the sandbed about 15" from the surface. They have both thrived and added new "shell" at a rather alarming rate since they were introduced into the system.

Whatever else they get, they get from the water column...Ca++ = 430ppm/Mg=1250ppm/pH=8.3 and temp a steady 76.1 +/- .7 degrees F.

I just got new test kits for ALka and Ca. maybe they will be better than the last 2 I got. Salifert's is what I got

I think I know why I have been having SO MUCH trouble getting ALka and Ca up in my 50 gal and it looks great in the new 90 gal but will have to keep testing to see if I am right. If so I will let you know what the finding are.

anything that you might feed a clam anyway is most likely to big.

the clams are fine filter feeders, so only planktonic food will be accepted. but it does not hurt to sumplement their algal diet every now and then.

I guess my clams feed on nutrient content in water . i never feed them persay. I do feed the filter feeders planton every now and then but not always they mostly thrive on the light and high calcium levels as well as the fact i keep my clam tanks at around 5 mg nitrate
