Contemplating over a nice glass of VSOP cognac in a big snifter.... Amazes me the number of creatures at night which you never see during the day. Like another world in my reef... I highly recommend the flashlight method in a dark room if you have never tried it.

Prefer a good claret myself... I'm working my way through a case of Chateau Palmer that I've been holding for several years.
With a red light? The folks down at Reef Central said, use a red light, fish can't see red. Makes sense... lots of animals don't see that wavelength. However, when I use it, the damsels peep out of their hiding place, swim over to the end of the glass, and stare right at me. Strange. Maybe it's a low quality red filter on the flashlight, maybe my imagination. Good night! ------------------ Cheers, Rob New York City |

Yes, red light.
You can even use a red T-shirt to cover a regular flashlight. Thanks to Staceon for the tip, it works! Joaco ------------------ My webpage Updated 3rd July 2000 |

My Solar 1000 puts the moonphase over my reef with 2 48" VHO's. Night viewing is really cool this way. I plan to try a red light to see if any other critters are visible as the moonphase uses low level blue light (one O3 blue and one actinic day).

Aside from having a few very low blue (LCD-like) nigthlights in the hood...I enjoy a good nightdive with the flashlight.
Although I have noticed that most everything in the tank doesn't pay mind to the red light...and everyone else says that the fish don't see this wavelength...my fish do! I don't think anyone's told them this info yet... ------------------ The NUT! Alex,
So I'm not (entirely) crazy, the fish DO see it! It might be a variation between different species of fish. In the different cat species, this is so. But now I'm more interested in seeing what the invertabrate life is up to. Claret looks like blood, under red light... muaha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ------------------ Cheers, Rob New York City |
