Question Shark

I have a 125 gallon tank. I was just wondering if I could keep some kind of shark in the tank. I have really no clue on what kind of sharks there are, except for Coral Banded Sharks (and great whites ). Information on feeding, and what other fish I could keep would be great.

Thanks,
Chris Noonan

well, I know you can get banded cat sharks at ffexpress, but I have idea if your tank is big enough, they would probably eat shrimp, lobster, mussles, small fish, and star fish, maybe sqid, and octupus, I don't know if you could train it to eat or not to eat frozen foods? I hope this helps a little bit

They have Bamboo Sharks at FFE also
Not sure what they eat either
Might have to give it up when it's bigger though

There are no species of sharks suitable for a home aquarium, unless you have a very large home and are willing to build a tank of at least 20,000 gallons.

i agree w/ ninong and the marine kid..........your tank is too small for anyshark........and if you decide to go against us and get one anyways i say good luck to you and we will do our best to help but you wont be keeping that shark for long........just a warning.......in a tank that size (im kinda biast though ehhehehe) i would get a black volitan lionfish and some triggers or puffers........

your tank is too small for any shark. i read somewhere that the minimum size should be 250gals for the smallest of sharks. sharks also limit what else you can have in your tank so your most likely better off without one. sharks may seem small in the LFS tanks but they grow a lot.

Minimum tank size to house a SINGLE banded cat shark is 8 feet long, 2 feet wide, 2 feet high. This shark will reach roughly 24 inches. That is not exact since some have been known to reach almost 4 feet. The leopard is OUT of the question. Beautiful but will reach 4 feet minimum, possibly 6. The record is 7 feet weighing 70 pounds.
Expect to have to build a custom tank for the shark to house it. I had to. The largest commercially made tanks are too small.
I have a leopard which is outgrowing his "room". A shark is not cheap to house and tankmates would either kill it or be eaten by it. No triggers, parrotfish, groupers, or large angels. They will kill a shark.
Here is an example. I am at $5K plus and need more room for what was once 8 inches long. They will add 12" each year for the first 3 to 5 years then the growth slows but they will grow their entire life. They also need a lot of swimming space so expect a rather barren tank.
Unless you have the funds to upgrade its living space do not buy a shark. They outgrow tanks. Do not believe the myth that they grow to the size of the tank.

I agree with Mikeman. Freshwater is the way to go. That would be the only way to be able to keep a "shark" in a 125.
The one most commonly offered for sale is the brownbanded bamboo shark. Expect it to grow to 24" plus. The epaulette is also seen but a little pricier. That will reach 24" plus. You may see a leopard. Medium price. Expect 48" plus. Forget about nurse sharks. 10 feet plus. Lemons and black tip reefs are also showing up every once in a while. I even saw a baby hammerhead once. These are 5 to 12 footers.
Still want a shark?
Also expect to buy a chiller. Some sharks are not tropical species no matter what type of tank the LFS has them in.

chris trust me on this SHARKS ARE OVER-RATED! do the lionfish thing you'll be much happier and entertained........if ya wanna go fish only ya can get triggers or puffers too.......but if ya wanna get corals and such (by the way ya need lr. for lions they need a place to get out of the lights cuz it can make them go blind) get like a dwarf lion and some of the bigger clowns such as maroons or tomato's which is how im going.....this way you can have colorful and magnificent looking fish............

I agree with everyone that a Shark gets waaaayyyyy to Big for your tank. Why don't you try one of the sharks cousins,a Sting Ray.If you can get the right kind they are very entertaining fish, often feeding from Tongs at the top of the surface. For more info on Stingrays, please feel free to contact me as I've had alot of experences with them in a 135 gal tank, only 2" taller than yours.

Mikeman,The smallest tank I would recomend for a Stingray would be a 75 gal tank. Its 4 feet long and 18" front to back giving the stingray enough room to turn around.I had a small one in a 90 gal Fish Only but I soon upgraded my tank to a 135 gal Oceanic.I have had good experences with the Blue-Spot Stingray, but they are generally hard to keep (hard to get eating).I could recommend the California Stingray as I know alot of people that have had good success with them.I think they sell the Califonia Stingray at Flying Fish Express. They are alot hardier than the Blue Spots.

Two things yuou should know - the lions wll quickly outgrow your tank. They do eat crustaceans.

Also, that arrowana will EXTREMELY QUICKlY outgrow your freshwater tank. They get huge and are swimmers.

I was reading an article awhile ago and it said arrowana's were so big a zoo or some public aquarium had to remove fully grown Arrowanas(Correct Spelling) from 240 gal tanks because even 240 gal tanks were to small for them .HTH's

Just curious PPFBOBB12 how many tanks do you have? Or had should I say? I hear you talking about all these fish you have had and huge tanks but you only show a 58g not filled tank and some kind of snake head tank on your site.

Am I missing something here?
