Well folks: Even though you all didn't have any faith in me... The eel is eating.. And doing quite well.. So.. To all the Naysayers...

Anyways... Just thought I would update...

The BRE is now taking Krill from my hand.. He comes up, to the edge of the acrylic, and takes it right out of my fingers... Too cool.. That's all I have to say...

Way to go Paul, I can't say it was a good choice to get a BRE, only because of what I know, not what I have read. I'm very glad to hear your eel is eating. That is the biggest concern.

Congrats, I hope it continues to eat, but I would just like to say that we didn't think you couldnt do it, we were only "naysayin" because you said it wasn't a big loss if it were to die, that kind of attitude isn't very good in this hobby.

Just to clarify: What I had meant when I said:

"It wouldn't be a big loss if he were to die" was that it wouldn't have been that big of a loss monetarily.. As I purchased him wholesale... I hate to see a fish die... And I agree, there are just some fish that should never be pulled from the ocean... But as hobbyists.. What can we do? We're not the one's collecting this stuff.. And trust me, having seen several distributors in the LA area, even if we are all to stop buying these "non tank friendly" fish.. They would still be caught... It's a catch22... And I personally don't know what can be done.... The only thing I know is that when I see a questionable fish, I do my best to take as good a care of it as humanly possible.. Even the most difficult to keep fishes can be kept if the tank owner is willing to put in the time and upkeep on the tank.. That means daily water testing.... Weekly or Bi-Weekly water changes... That kind of thing... Anyways.. I'll get off my soapbox now..

    Have a good day:

I dont mean to turn this into a flame or continue this discussion, but the thing is, you didnt do any research on the fish. And you supported the person you bought it from. You say they will continue catching them even if people dont buy them. WHY? If no one buys them they will have no reason to catch or sell them. You previously said "As a hobbyist what can we do?" Well the answer is do research and dont support an animal that doesnt do well in captivity.

I think that's the whole point......If we as hobbiest don't buy the critters, the LFS won't stock them and the suppliers won't import them and on and on.....

Its a shame to see some of the critter we see in our LFS. Sometimes we feel that WE could do better than the LFS, trying to keep the critter alive.......Let it stay at the LFS. There's nothing they like better than to sell some guy a BRE or an Anmeone, something they know will be dead in a few days, make some good $$$ and sell you something else.

i will most definetely have to disagree on this statement. many fish that are imported that have nill chance of surviving has very little if anything to do with tank maintanance. its all about diet. will the fish feed in captivity . even if it is offered its exact diet will it accept the food in captivity...... that's the problem.

when you say "kept" are you referring to alive or thriving?
probably anyone in any tank condition can keep any fish alive for 1 day.

As a hobbyist what can you do? hmmmm..... let me think for just a moment........ how bout this; don't purchase any animal that has a documented history of poor captive survival.
