On my post (Damsels have to go),Someone posted to buy a lion fish to eat my agrivating DAMSELS that I want to get out of my tank. Will they hurt my clown fish, yellow tang, polyops and corals any snails and hermit crabs? This may be my only way for a funeral for these AGRIVATING creatures......Thanks guys for the help

Well it won't "eat" your corals but expect the clown to be lunch as well as the hermits. These things can also get extremely large. The Volitans will grow to over a foot in a very short period of time.

    Cool

Well I've had my Volitans in a 180 FOwLR for nearly a year & I can't say he's grown to "over a foot" yet (maybe 8-9" fully extended). Never seen him go for hermits (I've got a number of tiny blue legs that were killing snails in there!) but I will agree about any fish up to 3-4".

    Ocean,

Lionfish’s eating habits vary from fish to fish and variety to variety.

I my early days of reef keeping, I remember my dwarf lions had a taste for peppermint shrimp but would not touch my cleaner shrimp.

The rule of thumb for lion fish is that anything that will fit in it’s mouth is a possible item on it’s food menue.

    Regards,

    Scott

    Hi:
i wouldn't bet on your lion eating the damsels either, regardless. I have a few damsels which have outrun my 7 lions, they are just too quick, and dart into the rock work, or physical outswim the lions. One damsels is so cocky he taunts the lions.
One of my volitans has reached close to 1 ft in one yr. Guess good quailty eats. Also i have had lions snack on the hermits, particularly the dwarf lions, they hang out near the back of the rock work and when the hernits molt....zap...
    Guess its lion specific
My suggestion for riding the damsels, disasemmeble the reef
