Hello,
I know that anemones are very difficult to keep so I want to avoid killing them. I have a pair of percs clowns and was just wondering if they will take up other organisms, such as certain corals, as a host. If so, what would be the best type of corals for this purpose. Thanks again. |

Well lets see anemone alternatives IMO in the order of there preference----
Any euphyllia coral ( frogspawn, hammer etc ) , leather corals, mushrooms. There are others but those are the top three Chuck ------------------ DIVE IN AND VISIT ME: Omegatron's Reefs Administrator at Reefboard |

Frogspan, leathers, open brains, etc etc... Xenia is a good alternative for clowns. I just started adding star polyps to me 10 gal nano... my first attempt at a reef I do have a bbt anenomae but I don't consider that reef. My clowns have taken to swimming in and out of the mass of star polyps. My only concern is that they will stress the polyps... do you think that is a possiblility? Most corals will play surrogate anenomae to a clown fish. Look for ones that flow these are usually the best chances for the clowns to take to. Xenia is still the best choice from what I've heard. In our 30, we have a true perc (was a pair, but the other lept to it's death. It's a sordid tale...) and it has quite happily adopted our maxijet powerhead as a host. It sleeps next to it, and rubs into it, too. Kinda funny, but we don't have lighting for an anemone in that tank. Maybe someday, but for now, it's "current" host will suffice. Does he take food to his "host" too? hehehehe! That has to be some funny stuff to watch! Maybe I should get my hand on some host maxi jets too! Henry ------------------ Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall down an open manhole and die. -Mel Brooks |

My LFS has a giant toadstool leather that their mated pair of clows just love. It's so cool to watch them lay, frolic and generally enjoy it. The thing is a monster too. I hear those are pretty hearty...or at least I'm hoping so as I just got one.

If I were a clown, I'd at least be choosy. I'd choose the heater over the powerhead. Then I'd never get the cold shoulder. Ok...that WAS bad...oh well!

My two captive bred False Percula Clowns adopted a Frogspawn until I got a captive bred BTA. They immediately adopted it, but still return to the Frogspawn occasionally. They rub against mushrooms on a rock near the BTA too. Must be a clown thing

Our pair of clowns adopted a feather duster! Here's a small pic, or you can see the enlarged photo at www.carolinareef.com/contest.htm
Good luck! Connie |

I put this green hairy thing in my aquarium and the clown loves it to death. I have no idea what it is, I bought it for $20 at my LFS. I think it might just be some kind of algae or something. http://www.geocities.com/doublebeeze...l?982866641333

Just for the record; I know of and have seen several clown fish hosted in Condylactus anemones. It's not the norm by any stretch of the imagination, but it does happen, and no problems arise.

From what I've read only captive bred clowns will host to condy's.
