Question Why is my toadstool doing this?

I got a toadstool leather (see pic) about a week ago and when I first put it in the tank, all it's little polyps(?) popped out. A few days ago I noticed it no longer extends them and is developing a weird, yellowish spot. Any ideas?

It seems to me that it is shedding it will normally do this for like 1-2 weeks..Then when it has completely shedded it will be more vibrantly colored..As long as all water parameters are fine and you didn't do anything like shock it wiht metal halides since they can be tempermental I wouldn't worry about anything..Dan

Hey Toadman, my toadstools' polyps extend then retract sometimes 4 times every day, maybe more-don't know. Mine seems healthy though, Colors are good and consistent. I don't know if this is normal. Don't know about the yellow spot either.

He looks healthy to me. The main thing to worry about is when their tissue begins to deteriorate. Leathers like these seem to like a little iodine addition occasionally. One of my favorite products for this is SeaChem Reef Plus. Toadstools also prefer a good current over them. Is he in an area with good current? I wouldn't worry too much about the little yellow spot unless it grows in size.

The yellow/brown spot seems to have grown slightly since yesterday. He's under a powerhead on a Tsunami wavemaker and gets plenty of flow. I also add 1 or 2 mL of iodine every morning before the lights come on (55 gal tank). Based on my past experience (which isn't much), early signs of deterioration make me panicy! Any other ideas?

Mine also does this often. I keep it near the top of the tank as it likes lots of light and a good flow. I re-arranged the furniture in my tank this afternoon and it looked like your pic and now it is still slightly shriveled up but the pollips are extended. When I first put it in the tank it took a few days to upen up. I have had it for about 8 months and it has nearly doubled in size.
