Since the Butterflies post has generated negitive publicity for most butterflies I would like to ask about some of the angels. I know that they are sort of a hit-miss thing so what has everyone to say about reef safe angels? I like the half black angels, and also the keyhole angels. Flames are cool too. So what is the consensus???/....Mike

I can only speak for the dwarf and pygmy angels because I've never had experience with the larger angels. They require a mature tank, at least 6 months, plenty of greens, some meats, sponges, etc... as for reef safe I'd say 50/50 for dwarfs you just have to take your chances. I've had one for about 3 months now and he's doing just fine, don't have corals in the big tanks so can't help you there. I guess I could put some star polyps in once my nano gets going. HTH

If you plan on having SPS, I would recommend against an angel. It took me over 4 hours of taking all my rock out to get to my flame so I could take it out. my black tang got ick from the stress of all the rock being moved. IMO there are no SAFE angels for a reef. Some might be less prone to eating coral, but none are SAFE.

Second Perry on "safe". These guys are scavengers by nature. They spend their time picking for food. This picking can disturb corals even if the fish isn't inflicting damage directly. My lemonpeel killed a brain before I realized what was going on. Not worth the hassle IMO.

I'm not doing so well trying to find the last inhabiatant for my tank am I? At this time I,m not planning on any SPS, so a flame might be OK. Looks like I have a bit to think about before I decide. Thanks......Mike

Perry what was wrong with the flame? Most angles do better in sps tanks. MOST /not all will leave sps alone. Look at dr mac he keeps an emperor angle and there are alot of sps reefers who can keep certian butterfly and angle fish. these fish tend to go more towards softies and lsp.But never can tell fish fish, JME is that sps reefers have better luck with all the cool fish.

Mike,
It really depends on what you want in your tank. If you really would like to have a certain butterfly or an angel and are willing to possibly do without certain corals then go for it. If your fish is picking a coral or two without mercy then take the coral back to your LFS and trade it for another. Most angels will pick on only certain corals, not every one in the tank. |

I have a imperator in my reef and he never bothers any of my sps's,hammers,or xenia. I can't keep open brain's because he will eat them but thats the only coral that I've tried that didn't work.IMHO Its a fair trade off.

I have a Flame Angel in the 75 gal with softies.
Sole has a flame in her 150 gal reef (we bought both Angels together, from Jeff's), her flame doesnt touch a thing either. You can see it here: Mine: one more pic of mine: BUT..! (because there had to be a 'but', right? I agree 100% with the above posts: It's a hit or miss thing... I don't know how the flame will react when I start adding more stuff in the future, but so far everything is ok. Sole keeps 5 or 6 different types of pygmy angels in her reefs, some DO nip at some corals. One of them (forgot which one), was very fond of Anthelia if I remember it well, so she had to move it. In the future I might try some softies with the Queen Angel in the 200 gal, but I have the feeling she will be nasty. We will see, have lots of time before I even try it Joaco ------------------ My webpage Updated 28th February 2001 |

I have a Lamarck's Angel. It has never bothered a coral at all. I chose it because Scott Michael's book calls it "one of the best Angelfish for reef aquariums, because it poses no threat to stony or soft corals" and I can back that up.

Thanks guys !! I'm not in any real hurry to add anything, as this will be the last fish in this tank. I'll keep looking for awhile and see what my dealer gets in in the next few weeks before I make a final decision. I can always see how the fish acts in HIS reef before I buy it . ...Thanks again .....Mike
