I have a 3-4" Crocea clam way up high in my 55 under 4x55 watt PC's and 2x40 watt NO actinics, the clam has and is doing great (even better when I get my HQI's)I got up this morning to find it wide open looking good as ever but laying on it side. I reached in to right it up and noticed it had detached itself from the LR and it looks like it left its foot behind. I know its normal for them to detach but do they leave part of their foot behind?
I'm looking at it right now and it looks great. Mark |

I would be skeptical since if they lose their bysal gland they will die. I would watch him closely however it may take a while to see any reaction. Our he may heal and be fine. I have several clams and they have never detached.

how long have you had the clam??? I would agree though.. have had several clams over the years... once they attach and settle in, they don't tend to move much... you should watch him carefully!

Hi Golfish,
You know this same situation happened to my newly acquired crocea. After 2 days in the tank my jaw dropped when I saw a strange meaty looking thing with strings to it and I immediately thought this nice looking crocea is on its last legs. But guess what it is still alive and kicking. Maybe it didn't like where you placed it. I would also keep an eye on it though and try to keep it propped up since it hasn't established a new foothold yet. Does it still exhibit quick reactions when something comes near it? When this occurred to mine I also posted the news and didn't get any replies of similar experience. I bought the Knop book Giant Clams and I didn't find any references to it yet (still combing through it). But proof as it is that they can survive is that my crocea is still alive after 2 months since it "shed" its foot. Makes me wonder if this can be considered as some sort of defensive or survival response from the clam. ------------------ John Susbilla Visit my "Flashy" new site: John's Reef Flat Alternate site Here tubs@firstworld.net |
