Post purple acropora

I just purchased a full mother colony of what They called puple tipped acropora. Just a beautiful peice. I have placed it on some rocks close to the top for full light.

Does this type of Acropora like a full current or less. Also does it need to be right on top closest to the light.

I have 8 110watt Vho. 5 super atonics and the rest blue.]
and 3 175 watt 10000K halides.

also a nice peice of scroll coral. give my some info for this peice too please.

Wrong Forum,
Inpulse buys are what kill the trade.

All Acros like strong current and most favor very intense light because they naturally grow high on the reef in full sun.

acropora's are a trickey devil...one might do so good you couldn't kill it the next you look at it and it dies. i wouldnt go wasting money on mother colony's take that 1 inch frags for 15 bucks.. i did and i got a nice purple tipped acro out of it.. basiclly dont jump into an acro untill your ready. or you could take a peice home cut it into 3 or 4 peices. place each peice in a different place.. witch ever does the best then move the rest near or close.

I already have three nice acropora ( 2 inch) and one montipora digitata. The reason I am asking for info is this is the first large colony I have aquired and i did not know whether it needed any special care outside of the norm. I like the idea of fraging it as sugested. Do u not think its a little early though ( with the stress of acclimation and such)

Thanks for the input

I wouldn't frag it for trade? Until you see growth. If it starts to die then maybe to save a piece. But for now I would just let it grow.

I agree with Iron ... watch it grow first, that will be a good sign that it is adjusting to your tank and it is in good health. Then we can talk about fragging

Did I drink too much last night? I swore I posted on this thread. Anyway I agree with ironreef and MtnDewMan on the fragging. I usually wait 3 months before I frag any of my acros.

mobrien, I would never frag a newly acquired acropora. Unless it does go into decline and its to try to save it. With new environments and having to acclimate to the system and all thats asking too much from sps corals. I think you should place this colony in your tank according to where the lfs had it in their system. If they had it under similar lighting I would put it in the same place on your rockwork. You, then as the colony acclimates move it up in the tank to where it will keep the nice purple tips. I wouldn't worry if they fade some it is to be extected, they will come back if your lighting is enough. Meanwhile, give it good current and ca. and alk. in order and, like Adam said, stable, stable, stable water quality. That is the key to keeping sps. HTH...

Come on guys... Morbin already got the coral and he's asking for help.

All Acro corals love high light and water movement. However, that's just not enough, they need more stable water than any other coral. Alkalinity not less than 3.0/Calcium 400/Temp. = 76-80.

Just keep in mind = Stable water.

Good luck
Adam
