What opinions do you have about aeration in a reef tank? I thought I remember reading that you should not because it depletes minerals or something of that sort. A new power head I just purchased has an aeration port, but I don't know whether to use it or not.

I would say for the most part NAY! I have a little aereation but its only in the top part of my tank from my spraybar, but i have seen tanks with alot of aereation with no ill effects either. HTH

I personally don't use the aeration tubes since the tiny bubbles they create are quite annoying - especially if you have a reef tank. Besides, I get all the aeration that I need from my protein skimmer.

A good skimmer provides enough aeration;provided it is the right size.

Not sure why you would want anymore airation then what you are already getting with a protien skimmer. A protien skimmer super saturates the water with oxygen. So unless you just like bubbles in your tank i would say it is not neccessary. I have read posts were it said bubbles can irritate corals? not sure if this is really true though?? Probably depends some what on which corals you are talking about...Anyway, a good protien skimmer is way more important then any other type of airation you could do.
