Thumbs up Latest RHO

I swear, this magazine gets better with each issue. It's presented brilliantly and written in language even I can understand. [I trust the cheque is in the post chaps.]

No really. Read it. Do it now. Cover to virtual cover.

Hi Marc,

Thanks for your comments.

I think I can speak for all of the staff of RHO when I say that we have been making a real effort to provide the audience with a good magazine. I have to add that much of the effort goes to Scott Z. who has been the "moving force" behind a lot of the changes.

We all anticipate - and hope - that it will be getting better as time goes on, as well.

My oh my! Dr Shimek I presume.

I Hardly need to say welcome to you as I think I've read just about everything you've written on the web! Well, all that I could find at any rate. I mention (and rave about) your stuff ad-nauseum as I'm a big reader of your "spineless" colummn and I feel as if I know you alreday. (If I had to critique it, it's only that it occasionally sails a bit over my bald patch!)

I've learned a lot from RHO and other online mags, but I feel "at home" on Reefland; particularly among fellow jokers like John Hamilton and Mike "Say No to Crabs" Poseiden, and pedants like the great Ninong. I've been made to feel very welcome here and I look forward to seeing your posts if you can find the time in your schedule to join us.

OK, I will now unstick my lips from your butt () and wish you all the best from the UK!

Jim, Dr Ron maintains a list of his articles here:

Some links no longer work but it's definitely worth a look and thanks again to Zenyha for the head's up on that.

Thank you for the kind words Marc and Jim. RHO is a joint effort between all of the staff. Ron, Eric, Brian, Gene and I all spend a good amount of time putting together the publication for everyone to read and learn from. Without all of us as a team, it would not be possible.

Trust me on this Scott and the team, without Reefland - my tank would have crashed by now and I have no doubt I'm not alone in this!

Marc,
This is the reason this particular forum was created- so the authors could elaborate a bit more if something actually did "sailed" pass someone in their articles.
Having said that, I urge everyone to read Scott's sticky thread on top of the page to get familiar with the rules of posting and rules for this forum in general.

I think the problem with Dr Ron's stuff is the content is necessarily quite complex; my problem with it is lack of knowledge on my part. :slap: Perhaps the references aren't as strictly necessary as they would be in an academic publication, but that's probably due to my upbringing in commercial ventures for a larger public audience.

When I wrote for, and consulted on, computer comics in the 80s and 90s, we separated the stuff into sections clearly marked (for the most part) according to the complexity of the subject matter. This is rather like the way that Brian talks about "learners" in the current issue.

Advanced aquarists presumably sail through Dr Shimek's articles, whereas I have to bounce various words off Google!

Far from being a criticism with RHO as a whole, this is actually a good thing - since the magazine taken overall the caters for all levels.

Thanks!

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the responses and replies in the author forum. I am very happy to be a part of reefland and RHO. It has been a great learning experience for me and I particularly enjoy the editing that goes on behind the scenes as I learn a lot when I'm corrected by Eric, Dr Shimek, Scott, etc

As I briefly touched on in Part 1 of my series, I agree with the comments here that some of the articles in RHO and other articles written by Dr Shimek are simply complex due to their content matter. I try to find out the level of knowledge of aquarists before I recommend reading so that I don't recommend something too difficult to grasp.

With the level of expertise and training some of the experts here have, it is necessary to scaffold the information, rather than just jump into certain topics. I think RHO is taking a lot of steps in the right direction in terms of having a lot of "series" of articles and I'll be doing my best to help out in the future!

Brian

Hey Ron, remember me? You used to talk to me a long time ago.

Gene, did you design Eric B's site? I'm seeing some uncanny style similarities here. (both are beautiful btw)

Hi Sara,

No, I couldn't possibly do something like that since I'm pretty much useless when it comes to computers. Scott is the one that did all the work.
