Lower Phosphates and Nitrates in your Reef Aquarium with Chaetomorpha Algae

    Hello From www.reefhotspot.com,

The presence of Phosphates and Nitrates in a reef aquarium slow coral growth and dull coral colors. Phosphates and Nitrates are also the source of food for nuissance algae. By adding Chaetomorpha Algae or Chaeto to your refugium you will cut down on the pressence of Phosphates and Nitrates in your aquarium. Chaetomorpha, being a form of algae, starves nuissance algae of their food source. Chaetomorpha algae grows like tangled spaghetti so it is easily trimmed and removed from you aquarium, thus exporting phosphates and nitrates from you reef aquarium. One of the added benefits of Chaetomorpha algae is that it provides the ideal home for a wide variety of zooplankton or very small shrimp like critters. Zooplankton provides an excellent source of natural live food for fish and corals in your reef aquarium.

Reef Hot Spot is an online saltwater fish and coral store. We specializes in overnight deliveries to customers throughout the US of high quality saltwater fish, live corals and aquarium snails and hermit crabs. At our online saltwater fish store customers can buy Chaetomorpha Algae at a great price,

How fast will this algae consume nitrates? (more or less) I am having problems with my nitrates and am looking for ways to lower them FAST! i have also heard about using mangrove?? would you need the plant to be rooted or would the "chute" floating around be enough? what would be some other ways or reducing nitrates? I have a 90 Gal system with about a 2.5' sand bed and my Nitrates are at 40 ppm! which has me VERY worried, i am doing water changes but that doesnt seem like enough.

    Hello Mike,

Thank you for posting. Chaetomorpha will reduce nitrates but if you have chronically high nitrate issues the best course of action is to use a chemical media that will absorb nitrates. There are many different types available. You may want to search a quality dry good vendor to further investigate the pros and cons of each different type.

mike007 its true mangroves are good but they grow pretty large and you want it in an area where there is no top to grow out.you can stick it in a rock and it will root.as far as water change, how large of ones are you doing and do you turn off your pump and heater etc.to do it.make sure nothing is dead in tank and sift through the sand.you may know all this,i dont know.just giving ideas.im not a pro but have had a year and 7months of trile and error.my tank is my baby so i spend a lot of time researching, asking, and figuring out how to make it better.you asked this question over a week ago so forgive me if its to late

It isn't too late Lori, thanks for the help. why would turning off the heater help?
the nitrates are going down but i was just trying to do it as quick as possible. i wanted to know how FAST mangroves or Chaeto would eat up the nitrates.

Re: Lower Phosphates and Nitrates in your Reef Aquarium with Chaetomorpha Algae

Chaeto will eat up nitrates but the speed with which they are consumed is relative to their growth rate which is dependent on the amount of water flow and quality and intensity of light that the Chaeto is exposed to. Chaeto grows best with lower temperature light in the 6500K range so it is recommended to house the Chaeto in a seperate refugium where you can provide this type of light. Mangroves are generally much slower to consume nitrates.

The simplest and most effective measure solely for reducing nitrates is water changes followed by chemical media.
