I have personally replaced all but a few of my hermits with these snails as in my opinion they do a much better job at cleaning up after meals. They are on it like flies on ..... well you know what i mean. Anyhow, the rise out of the sand as if they were on elevators and quickly go to work on getting rid of the left over food in the tank.

These are some of the hardest marine snails you can buy. If they did not last for years in you tank there is another reason. As far as backround these snails have been in American tanks longer than any other marine snail with no problems reported. Do a google search on this snail you will get thousands of hits. Try that with any other marine animal. The only true neg post on this snail is it is a host to a flatworm that causes swimmers itch. So if you swim in your reef tank be aware!

Yes, since their natural lifespan is 30-40 years, with some individuals reported to be 70 years old, if they die at all in your aquarium, then something isn't right for them.

Ilyanassa obsoleta is the natural host for at least 9 different species of detrimental trematodes. Studies indicate that more than half of the adult snails will contain these parasites.

Why dig up old posts unless you want to start something?

For the record, I DID try these snails, bought them on E-bay like you suggest, and they all DIED within 6 months or so. Could have been because they were shipped to me dry, could have been because their from cold water could have been many things. I do know this, I have several Trochus and Mexican turbo snails in my tank that I have had for 5+ years now, so why bother with a snail that is known in MY EXPERIENCE to not do well?

Wow, what an old post. To each their own. Ive used them for a while now, and still have the original ones. Have at it with whatever you use.
