One thing you need LOADS of is patience - and you can't buy that, Don. Your LFS (fish shop) should be able to tell you want you need, but be careful what you get s/h as quality varies and saltwaters kills some things like pumps very quickly. Shop around for the best deals - but if you're going to get into this seriously, budget for some RO/DI premixed saltwater and live rock first. You need that in the tank before you add anything like livestock. In fact, its fun to buy LR you'll need about 220-300lbs of the stuff (!) and watch to see what sprouts from it. Anything nasty that might hurt your fish will be dead in a month or so - it's worth the wait.

Skimmers are not necessary in the early days, heaters (you should have two in case one fails) and pumps are though.

Welcome to the world of poor reefkeepers and welcome to Reefland!
