Sandbed clams

At one point I remember somebody mentioning that they had sandbed clams coming out of their ears. I am looking for some if that person is here.

Thanks,

Anne

Re: Sandbed clams

I tried two dozen sand bed clams (Tapes philippinarum) in my 120-gal reef aquarium with 6" DSB and they did not survive long-term in spite of my feeding the tank DT's live phytoplankton daily. After ordering them as part of a package deal from IPSF in Hawaii, I learned that they don't survive very long in captivity, probably because our tanks do not provide them with appropriate nutrition.

All of my clams arrived in good shape. All were very healthy looking. Sizes ranged from 2-3 cm. Within a few hours of adding them to the tank, all of the clams had buried themselves in the sand bed. The first fatalities were observed about three months later. They rise to the top of the sand bed when they die. Half were dead within five months; all were dead within nine months.
