New to Saltwater, new FOWLR tank...
Hi everyone! I've been doing freshwater for many years but this will be my first saltwater experience! I have a 120 (it's a tall, only 5 feet long) that I'm going to convert to salt- I'm going to use live sand & LR. I have a Berlin Turbo skimmer, I was thinking I'd use an Aquaclear also (I have several). This is what I was thinking of getting (in this order too)...
Maroon Clown ArcEye Hawkfish Snowflake Eel Volitans Lionfish (or I could get a dwarf?) Harlequin Tusk (I love this fish!) Pinkface Wrasse What do you think? I tried to pick fish that interest me but are hard to kill . Also easy to feed. How much live rock do you think I'll really need? I was thinking of ordering a 45lb box of the Figi-will it be enough to make a cave for the Eel? I could use some base rock too. Also, any chance snails , etc for cleaning would hang around for long? What about urchins or starfish? I know I can forget about shrimp. |

45 lbs of live rock will be a decent start but not enought for the tank. You will need 2-3 boxes sooner or latter and the sooner the better. You should try to get 1-1.5 lbs of rock per gallon of water. 45 lbs is not that much once you place it in a 120 gall tank it will look very empty and you will need plenty of hiding place for the fish to call home.
The fish overall looks to be a decent selection. Be warned that snowflake eels are fish eaters so get a small one to start or you may be missing fish when you get it. |

Hi DawnS!
Welcome to Reefland!
The fish selection looks ok, fair the warning the tendar has given though. ![]() I would also agree that more liverock is desirable. The look will be important to you but more so is the additional shelter it will provide and the aid of filtration. I agree that a lot of LR in a FO system doesn't look good but I would go for around 80 lbs to provide a nice full look, be able to make plenty of caves and hiding places and help the bacteria population. Regards, Scott Z. |
