food
I was just wondering if the food I give my saltwater fish is OK for my freshwater fish too. I feed frozen Prime Reef, Formula 2, frozen mixture I make myself, and Formula 1 dry pellets. I add Selcon and Zoe to the food. My FW fish are 2 spotted puffers and 5 tiger barbs and one betta in his own big bowl. I have dry food for the FW guys, but they love the saltwater mix and it's easier for me to feed everybody the same thing. Do you see a problem here or do you think it's OK?

I would agree; I think it not only will be ok but will be better for them offering the mixed diet.

Don't know why not. All my fish (except my finicky maroon clowns) love Formula 2 and it says on the package it's for all fish that eat algae. I'm pretty sure my goldfish like it too, they seem to eat anything, but they're in the pond so I can't tell that much. Formula 1 should be pretty nutritious too. When I compare ingredients, I see that the FW food formula usually contains wheat flour, wheat germ, soybean meal, and similiar grains. Formula 1 lists wheat flour too, but it's 4th after krill and fishmeal and lists no other grains.
If your goldfish are outside they need a wheat-based formula for winter because it is easy to digest, and goldfish's digestion slows way down during their semi-hibernation. You could kill them by continuing a high protein diet in winter. But of course, if your goldies are inside there is no season change for them and continuing a high protein diet will probably just grow big colorful goldfish. ![]()
