should i get a bigger UV?

hi guys..i know this topic been brought up a trillion times but i have a 9 watt uv from coral life about 6 months now..it's been running 24/7 on my 40 gals...but the manual saids it can go on a tank up to 90 gals..but my fish still get sick..all parameters are fine...i feed garlic and zoecon everyday...my question is should i get a higher voltage UV? like 25 watt? maybe the bigger the better..does uv really work? some ppl swear by it some think it's a waste of $$$...btw i have a 75 gal with fish n coral

I think they are a waste of money. Many people keep fish alive and healthy in tanks without them which tells me they are not required. I would say something else is going on in your tank. When you say your fish always get sick, what kind of "sickness" are they getting? Where are you getting your fish from? Have you tried getting a fish from someplace different and had the same results?

A 9W unit is plenty big for a 75 Gal. IMO you need to look into other factors like overcrowding or incompatible fish combinations.

UV has some specific applications and can be a very useful tool but it is certainly not a silver bullet that will overcome water quality issues or the ones mentioned above.

Kevin

Water Changes

How often do you perform water changes? I perform 20% water changes and do have a 40 watt uv on a 200 gallon fish and my fish have never gotten sick. I think everyone should do 20% water changes every week. The cleaner the water, the better it is for the fish.
